Clamps that lock down to the bed rails, generally.

We had one when I was a kid.  That's how I remember it being.

I think he's asking about slide in campers, not camper shells. They make kits that bolt on to the front and rear of the bed and use turnbuckles to hold the camper. There are also frame mounted tie downs. The frame mounted units are better for late model pick-ups as they're making the beds out of thinner metal these days.
