Everybody loves a bargain. We all brag about bargains. But what about some of your least favorite transactions? Gun, Ammo, Mags or Parts? Fess up to poor purchases and mistakes. Tell me about your worst financial decisions.
My worst faults are custom rifles. I love 'em. But in all honesty I will never be able to recoup the money I put into one. One of the worst deals I ever witnessed was right before the ban expired. Watched a guy buy 3 glock hi-cap mags for $125 each. About 10 days later they were $20 |
OUCH! That had to hurt!
So far, I haven't a mistake of that caliber (pun intended)... But I'm certain the day will come about. Live and learn, bro, live and learn. |

$1500 for a single shot, bolt action 22. Then a dropped another $1000 getting it just right
Sold it about a year ago for $1800 ETA: didn't read your whole post. I don't regret the rifle, as I won 3 national championships with it. Just hated spending that kind of money on a 22 |
$1100 for a Colt Gold Cup Series 80. Keep in mind this is MA, where it is illegal to sell new Colts.
1,200 for my 1187, most money ill ever pay easly. no gun is worth over that stock in my mind.
I bought a new Colt AR15A2 Gov't. Carbine back in June of '95 for $1300, not including sales tax. The AWB was less than a year old but pre-ban stuff was commanding premium prices around here. I just had to have the thing and I paid out the nose. I am glad I bought it though because I still have it and it's a great little rifle.

The most I ever spent was somewhere around $650 building my AR, and that was bits and pieces over the course of a year. The most I've ever paid for a firearm at once was $360 for a G19. Runner up was $350 for both a Series '70 and a S&W M25-5 from an uncle. I'm a cheap bastard, and you guys are too loaded!
Dropped about $1100 on my first Pistol: Desert Eagle
I have a $900 10/22 My AR has about $1800 total including mags and other goodies. |
You got any idea what an M82A1 costs?
Then I couldn't find any place to shoot it. Damn that hurts. |
$7,000 for a 98% FAMAS (MAS .223) with seven new mags, color manual, bayonet, scabbard, and cleaning kit. FYI, when the FAMAS first hit the market in the mid 80's, CAI was selling it for just $899.00!!!!
>$1500 to build my own 1911, including two trips to Robar, and I am still tinkering with it trying to get it to run reliably. And if I were to sell it I would never get more than $500 for it.
I've got $12-13 hundred tied up in a 1911 custom job. Its nice, but I never shoot it. It was in the shop almost a year getting done, and I got into sigs in that time. Oh well.
Paid $650 for a used P228 two tone. That was dumb. But its my favorite, and I shoot it better than the stinking 2x as much Para, so I don't care. |
1500.00 for a 1964 belgian browning superposed trap shotgun w/upgraded wood. beautiful gun.
We have a lot in common. Mine is a '67 32" Broadway trap. |
Least ya didn't pay retail. And are you telling me you can't find a place in TEXAS to shoot a .50 BMG? Hell aren't there MILES of border? |
I had an SL8-1 with 2 extra mags, and the HK red dot/scope/carry handle optic for it. All together it cost me about $2,000.00
The second most expensive gun I've ever bought was my HK USC. Paid $1,200 for the gun, also with 2 extra mags and another $450 for a Trijicon reflex for it. I won't call that a bad purchase though. She's a good little rifle and I use it as home defense gun at the moment. |
$950 for my FAMAS
But I sold it for $4k so that worked out okay. |
Yeah, shoot it at Mexico. They shoot at us! |

Is she available for parties? So what's the going rental rate? (unless of course it's one of those 'If you have to ask, don't bother' deals.... ) Nevermind. |
i spent $250 on a kg99 (think tec9). sold it today for $100. thing never did work right.
AR-10(T) with scope and mags and stuff - Probably over $3,000.
You KNOW it was worth it. |
You've got one of those already huh? I was just reading about them today in American Rifleman. How do you like it? |
$3200 on a 1911. I stuck a bunch of accessoried on an AR once.....replacement value must have been on the far side of $4k.
Ahh, how could I have forgot. I ate 2 grand on a wedding ring once....although not a gun, it was definitely the worst investment I have ever made Live 'n learn I guess
$3100 - Barrett M99. Got it from a local FFL I do business with a lot, brand new.
Second place is $1900 - HK Mk. 23 SOCOM |
I like it so much I'm thinking about selling my AR-15's and buying more AR-10's. The rifle is more accurate than I am and I've never had a malfunction. |

$1750 on a custom AR10:
26" Obemeiyer Barrle, FF Tube, etc. Don't have any optics for it though :( Looking at probably another $1000 for just optics. |
$4k on a numbers matching 43ac a block G43 with scope and mount.
Real mount and ZF4 scope, artic code. Unfortunatly the mount is non-numbers-matching to the rifle, but numbers matching mount and rifle would easily be worth 2-3k more. Finding a real scope mount is hard enough as it is, with examples on EBay fetching a grand. Haven't shot it yet, but will soon. Runners up are the $3.4k for an HK94 in 2001, 3.2k and 3.3k for two Steyr AUG's....and my very first gun buy (Which I got raped on), a little over $3k for an Entreprise-receivered pre-ban L1A1 with trilux and mount...didn't know jack from FAL-pattern rifles at the time (or any rifle, really) so I got taken. This was in 2k or 1999 or so. It's maybe worth 1500 in a state with AWB in effect, like NY... What about cheapest guns? That is, things picked up for dirt cheap which have an appreciable value on a collector's market? It's nice picking up on the hobbies of your father, especially when your the only son who does...and he's been collecting since he was younger than I |
$1,069.95 for a baned bushmaster A2 carbine--broke the hell out of me for a year
i know, i know i was a dumb, newb who had not found ar15.com yet NEVER will pay MSRP for anything from now on |
I've spent around 800.00 on a bunch of different guns but my AR has the most money sunk into it (around 3000.00) so far. Thank god it's my only one.
I paid 1200 for Sendra carbine pre-ban. It's a bit of a franken gun, purple reciever, A2 upper with A1 FS and old style Colt collapsable stock.
I think it still holds a little value over normal to some people, me included, since it was owned by John Ross, came with a signed letter and signed copy of UC. |
