 ‘Pends on what you want to do. All around plinking, light hunting/varmints, .177 is hard to beat. Pellets are cheap and there is not much that you can do with a .22 that I can not do with one of my .177’s. The best cal. I think is the .20, almost as fast as the .177 with the weight of the .22. I have 7 air rifles, most used are my 2 Beeman R1's. ( one scope, one open sight ) in .177. The gun for serious work is a scoped Crow Magnum in .20. Tree rats and Rabbits at 50 yards is the norm wit it.. I do have a .22 RWS that I do not use much, just runs out of steam too quick.

I got my oldest son a Beeman that is .177 and only 500fps but shoots awesome groups. I love it but the stock is too short for me.

.177 will kill just about anything the 2  will.

You lose 20% velocity, but are flinging 2-3 times as much lead.  This was one argument that led me to choose a .22RWS.

Also, I think that there are a greater variety of .22 pellet types and weights.

If it is mainly for target shooting, then the .177 is fine.  If you want to hunt with it, then I think you would be better served with a .22.

I do punch paper with mine, and at standard target distance of 11m, with the right pellet, it is very accurate.  And every bit as accurate as a friends .177.

Hands DOWN.  I have an RWS .177 (M48)
and a cheap chinese .22.

I use the chinese .22 a LOT more. It just hits a lot harder.  It puts birds down with authority. I had some flyoffs with the .177.  I knew they would die but I'd have to chase them down and shoot them again.

I rarely if ever do that with the .22.

.22 for hunting. I have an RWS 48 in .22 and it knocks 'em down. Great gun.
