He'll probably be the the chief justice.  What exactly does that mean.  What is the significance of being the chief justice of the Supreme Court, as opposed to just a justice?

Basically "first among equals."

Has some added duties, lets see:

Presides over impeachment proceedings.

Administrative cheif of the judicial branch.

Appoints the members of the "secret" court that deals with some security and espoinage issues.

Assigns the "opinion" writing job to a member of the "majority."   (I.e., if Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, Kennedy, and Beyer all vote in the majority, the chief justice decides which of those guys writes the opinion).

Sets the schedule, assigns what cases are heard, chancellor of the Smitsonian Institution, head of the Judicial Conference of the United States oh and he speaks first which is a huge plus, also writes the majority opinion or picks an associate justice to write it. Later

Negative.
Judges discuss appeals and any prospective appeal must get at least three affirmative votes from the justices in order to appear on the docket.
