Cpl. Matt Orth, a 22-year-old scout sniper with 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment stares down the scope of his M40 A3 sniper rifle. The Clearwater, Fla., native is credited with the longest kill of the current seven-month deployment. He killed an insurgent approximately 1,256 yards away in the city of Husaybah, Iraq.

I hate to crap on someone else's bloodbath, but I would assume there is a certain amount of luck involved at that range
Good shot though. The fact remains that he wanted to shoot the guy and he did.

Why? Carlos Hathcock made long range shots, so did soem Canucks in Afghanistan. It is not uncommon to here of people making 1000 yard shots, know your range, know your weapon, and train train train! I am bettign this young man has the training, ahs a certain amount of aptitude towards this type of shooting, and had a good range finder or spotter with him. Life is good if you're not a terrorist

The M40 A3 is a 30 cal. 1,000 yards is a long shot for a 7.62 NATO. You have to load them warm for the bullet to stay supersonic at 1K yards. A 1,256 yard kill witha .308 shows an incredible ammount of skill, and a fair amount of luck too! A most excellent shot. |

I could see with a Barrett, but an m40? Holy shit! Now i'll never laugh when i see a old rifle with a sight measured out to 2000 meters! To make that shot the guy (target) must've been sleeping or sitting on a toilet or something

With the range known, it is not so tough. At Gunstock I, my wife took a single shot with our .50 BMG rifle at 1000 yards--and hit the "X" (~3" tall) of the X-ring. A man-sized target at 1200 should be NBD for a trained sniper. As a matter of fact, Striker's wife took her first shot EVER with a rifle--same set-up, and hit about a foot from dead center. Not bad for her first shot ever with any kind of rifle. Cool lady. Oh, both shots were witnessed by about 20 guys--including Mark Westrom of Armalite Corp. and CockedandLocked and Striker. Kudos for this guy doing it under combat conditions though. Nicely done!  ETA: Just saw the posts above--with anything in .30 caliber it's a whole 'nother ball game. The shot was amazing. Nothing short of amazing.

Yeah but the point is it aint a .50 BMG, it's a lousy 7.62 NATO! I figured at that range a .30 cal nato would "ping" your skin and give you a bad welt at worst! ETA: ooopss did'nt see your ETA! oh well. |

You guys must not have ever shot Palma matches. Those shots are do-able with an excellent rifle, good ammo and an experienced shooter/spotter team. Just wish I could do it

It was not said he made that shot with his M40 A3. I recall another sniper that took out an insurgent at more then 1000 yards, with his m82(AP non-match ammo, missed the first shot, adjusted, was dead on). But he was also pictured with his 308. on the armys website.

HEY LONG DISTANCE SHOOTERS!
How small does a mansized target look thru a 10x scope at 1,200 yards? I would guess really small? I have never shot out past 300  Need to find some nice open land...EPOCH |

Come on...it's skill either way. No ordinary shooter can just go hit a target at 1200 yards with a .308. Hitting a 48inch steel plate at that distance requires skill, let alone a mansize target. This isn't even a debate, for God's sake. |

Know what mil dots look like? A 6' man at 1200 yards would be approximately 1.7 mils in size. Thats how big it looks. At 1000 yards, he's be 2 mils. |

Did *anyone* read the article? He used a 50 cal. The pic, for y'all who must be illiterate, does seem to show an M40 type rifle.

Ah, two different guys.
That is what happens to reading comprehension when you read snippets at a time while working. Ranges seemed similar enough. Besides, I haven't gotten into a good screaming match on the board lately. Feel kinda lonely with no enemies. |
