A somewhat long...but very interesting read about what happens when you depart an airplane at Mach 3+
HOLY MAKRUL ANDY!!! What a ride! Can't recall...was the program out of the "black" yet? |
LBJ announced the existence in early 1964.
FWIW, an acquaintance (P&W) who worked on the program described the aftermath of a breakup at speed, without going into detail, there was no chance of survival (not questioning this story, just that at least one other event was not so fortunate) |
Note to self: manual adjustment of control systems is a bad thing at Mach speeds.

Bet he needed new underwear after that ride.....................
HOL-EE SHIT! The term "escape pod" would be mentioned in every meeting there after.
Damn. Is an understatement... More like: DAAAAHHYYYMMM!!! |
Yea he announced the RS 71 as the SR 71. Bomber |

Wow talk about an E-Ticket ride! Sombody upstairs must REALLY like this guy.
Wow! What a read! Too bad the co-pilot didn't make it.
Military test pilots are true American heroes in my book. |
For some of the younger people, a little background: At one time in Disneyland, Anaheim Calif, they used to have tickets to get on the different ride, that was before you paid one admission are free to ride any ride in the park. Anyways, you would buy a book of tickets and usually, they had an assortment of tickets from A to E, the less interesting rides were the A tickets, progressing up to the E tickets which were the best rides in the park, such as Pirates of the Carribean, Matterhorn etc. |

Old Cobol programmer fart |

Yup...not many among us remember that! Mom used to carry the ticket books around and we always had to make a decision which of the cool rides to use our "E" tickets for. |

That man never got a bonus check or a debit card from FEMA or the Red Cross...

Wasn't there a guy that survived a free fall in WWII?? Its just a story I remember reading about many moons ago.
IIRC: The guy was a Lancaster Tail Gunner. His Lanc took a hit one night and caught fire and the Pilot ordered everyone out. Since the tail turret was cramped he didn't have his chute on and fires were spreading inside the a/c and got to his chute. He decided he didn't want ot burn to death, so he managed somehow to jump out of the a/c at 18,000 feet with no chute. He fell through a pine forest which broke some of his fall and hit a snow bank. IIRC he had minor injuries perhaps a broken leg or something. Anyone remember anything like this? |

I have that story saved in my favorites. I go back and read it every now and again just for fun. Good one. |

This must have been written after JFKs speech. He was the one that was dyslexic and said SR-71 instead of RS-71.
Great read! My little heart swelled with pride and relief knowing I am a natural born chicken shit. I'm gonna need something to help me sleep tonight.
LBJ was the moron who called it SR instead of RS. IMO though, SR71 fits better than RS71. |
