Hello,

Which is more suitable for precision work out to 300 meters. I am limited to 300m ranges so REAL long range capability is not an issue. The platform would be a bolt action precision rifle. All thoughts greatly appreciated!!

I suppose you're right...a .223 would be a bit cheaper caliber to shoot, though. BTW is it possible to reload subsonic .223 rounds for bolt action rifles?

BTW, this .223 i built and hand load for

has shot 3 shots @ 200y @ .36"

my best summer with it was 112 ground hogs, 3 cats, 4 crows

I guess it depends on the weights and velocities of the bullets of the two rounds. From and AR15 vs. M1A standpoint the AR15 is supposed to be better from an accuracy standpoint and it easier to maintain. Something about the heavier bullets now available for the .223 Rem making it a better choice from a target shooting standpoint anyway.

At 300 meters the accuracy difference of the 2 calibers is moot. You shoot either out of a good gun you will get good accuracy, you shoot either out of a crappy gun and you get crappy accuracy.

One could argue that depending on the type of target you are at the far end of the .223s efficient range. In other words if hunting will the .223 still have enough left for a guaranteed clean kill? Maybe, maybe not. The .308 still has enough oomph at that range for just about anything in North America. (Let's not get pissy note the words just about anything, that does n't mean everything)

For day-in-day-out target shooting out to 300, I would take a .223 loaded with 75s or 77s every time over a 308.
