If you shoot 1" MOA, then the diameter of your group is 1" at 100 yards, or 2" at 200 yards, or 10" at 1000 yards.
If you shoot 0.5" MOA, then it's 5" at 1000 yards. |

Minute of Angle. Or a spread of about one inch per hundred yards. A group of shots from the center of one bullet hole to the center of the furthest bullet hole. In general: 1 MOA could be described as a standard. Go under 1 MOA and you have an excellent shooting rifle. 1 MOA to 2 MOA and you have a good shooting rifle. Above 2 MOA and and less than 3 MOA your rifle is decent. 3 MOA and larger is bad. |

How to calculate?
Well, 1" is about 1 MOA... 100 yards is 300 feet which is 3600 inches. The circumference of a circle with radius of 100 yards is 22,619.5 inches. Since a complete circle is 360 degrees, each degree is 60 minutes, there are 21,600 arc minutes for this 22, 619.5 inches of circumference. Dividing the 22, 619.5 inches by 21,000 gives about 1.047 inches per MOA at 100 yards. |

Area of Operation, that's correct. I seem to remember MOA being marked on maps that showed large military reservations such as China Lake and other missle/artillery ranges.  TC |
