A guy came in today looked around as I was talking with him for about 20 minutes his story came down to this ...
he has come to the conclusion that the police are not always there and he needs a weapon however he finds that fact to be repulsive to him as he is forced to own a weapon so therfore if he must get one it must be more than a mere weapon it must have some sort of historical value Intresting outlook to say the least i did press him a bit that if he found a weapon somewhat replusive that he probably should not get one as most likely he would not have the will to use it if need be he wanted to press on so he looked at about everything WWII or older we had in stock he looked at quite a bit handgunwise and I was surprised he gotten his ID card you need to by a handgun in Nebraska he really liked a Nambu it took me awhile to talk him out of that as 8mm might be a little tough in a SHTF He pretty much settled on a M1 carbine ( not a bad choice really as "historical" weapons go) At least he did not want a jap rifle . and for handguns he really liked a AC 42 P-38 I tried to steer him best i could for a servicable SHTF "historical" weapon he did not buy anything but I thought it was a really odd thought process and figured you guys would find it intresting |

AK-47
M1 M1A UZI AR-15 All have historic value if you think about it. Anyhow, I think the M1 Carbine is a great choice and is the first one to pop into my head when I read your post. |

I should start a local "insurance" group in my apartment complex. You liberal pussies that don't like guns but want protection can pay me such and such a month, and if the SHTF you can hole up at my place where I can protect your sorry ass with all the nice guns you have bought me over the last few years with the "insurance" money.
SA 1911 mil-spec GI or something would be a nice 'historic' gun
Not for home defense. |
I disagree strongly. A Garand is not the better weapon for a weak-wristed liberal.z |
For this guy? you really think so? Seems like too much for a beginner who is gunshy. I know a guy who is like this. He too wants to buy a gun that has some value apart from being 'merely' a weapon. His problem is that he and his wife still live with his parents who won't let him keep a gun in the house. |
I understand his thought process. Its sort of like buying car insurance. He knows he needs it, but does not want it. He therefore has to justify it to himself and if its a working historical artifact, he can tell his liberal friends that is the reason he owns it. No matter. Another gun owner and once he shoots it, another convert. Offer to take him out and teach him to use it properly. Don't do this casually, but make a specific appointment. A good deed goes a long way.
I showed him a circa 1917 1911 Colt but he did not like it
I was bummed i did not have a SP1 in stock to show him all in all he semed like a decent guy |
there went your perfect oportunity to get rid of the hi-points in the pistol case.
tell him they used by stalin himself. he will by them all for the low price of 599.99 each. if he's going to be an asshat and an idiot he should buy something comparable to him. |
It would magically become a "family heirloom" and would thus be allowed in the household. Guy might be a lib but he has it worked out. Momma can't make him toss out grandpappys old war gun.
He'd never figure out how to load it effectively. +1 on the carbine. |
as long as the wife never finds out what "Blue Sky Imports" means |
Get him one of those surplus P-1 or PP walthers floating around. Also historically valuable, but not so much so as to not shoot them.

Finally got a team membership I see. |
dude
don't waste an old possibly somewhat historic gun on a fuck like that unless it's rusty an old gun needs to go to a real gun owner that will take care of it and appreciate it |
Hey Scott hows lincoln treating you yeah I wanted a avatar pic I figure Darwin would be fun here on arfcom |

You should have talked him into a "hi capacity" 24 pack of granola bars.
enfield #3 would have been a good gun IMO. .303 might be a problem for SHTF. in that case maybe a winchester 30-30? good traditional gun. or a Model 1903 Springfield service rifle? many choices here, but i would have probably tried to talk him out of a semi-auto for his "first" gun.
You should've sold him a flintlock musket! That'll teach him history.
we have a wheelock |
Not very good |

What the guy REALLY wants is to be able to justify his purchase to his libtard friends. He can't admit to his friends he might need to use it to actually defend himself by killing a poor misunderstood needy person by pretending he bought the gun for its historical importance.
Edited to add: If he wanted something with historical significance... and a good looter shooter, the .30cal M1 Carbine is an excellent choice. The ".30 Carbine" was THE SHTF rifle when I was a kid... it had the popularity the AR-15 does now. 15 and 30 rnd mags were cheap and plentiful. So was Korean War surplus ammo, almost as cheap as .22LR. And if you REALLY wanted to go all out tactical, you got one with a "paratrooper stock". It is STILL a good, reliable rifle, but cheap ammo is harder to find. This liberal that is now seeing the light could do much worse. Now if you could sell him on that Springfield Govt Model 1911, too... |

I am going to go out on a limb here and admit something to you guys. This was exactly my same path to gun ownership!
As a young kid, my dad signed me up for the local "Rifle Club" that was sponsored by the police department of my town because he thought I needed a hobby. (town was Evergreen Park, Il, ironically a suburb surrounded on three sides by the gun grabbing City of Chicago!). I enjoyed it, but never bought my own rifle. Then I got into college and was ruinied for the next 8 years by liberalism. Hell I even protested the Gulf War and look where I am now! LOL! Slowly, by listening to my dad and G. Gordon Liddy I awoke to the reasoned rationality of conservatism around 1996. But it took 9/11 to actually make me a gun owner. I walked into the local gunshop on 9/12 a complete novice wanting to buy an M14! My dad was in the Army in the 1960s and he had won some awards shooting his M14, and later M1 when he joined the Guard. I wanted dad's rifle. When the guy showed me the price tag on the M1A my heart sank! If I couldn't get that, I wanted something that was historical (got a BA degree in history) as well as practical. I knew I could never justify an AR15 to my wife! So what I settled for was a $300 M1 Carbine. My wife still freaked, she wouldn't have a gun in the house! I told her too bad, its staying. Today she owns her own Bushmaster M4, Walther P22, S&W J frame .38 and is a CCW holder! It all started with me shedding my last vestige of liberalism, the fear of guns, and buying that "historically justified" M1 Carbine. I finally got that M14 too, but sold it to buy shit for this deployment (joined the Army after 9/11 too, AT AGE 32!). First order of business when I get home from Baghdad will be buying another hammer forged LRB M14! What I am trying to say is that sometimes it takes an earth shattering event to wake up the sleepers. I think this newb needs to be encouraged and welcomed, especially into this community. I have learned more on AR15.com than just about anyplace. You'll notice by my "joined on" date that I found this forum only a little whil after that frist gun purchase! Food for thought! |
Wow! Excellent story, thanks for posting that. |
Glock-19, I'll add a simple "Ya done good"
Bringing new gun owners to the fold sometimes take small steps. |
So let me get this right after all that time you spent with him he didnt buy anything? |
You should have SSS'ed him.
It would have taken care of the only liberal in all of Nebraska. |
I would'a steered him toward the P-38 and told him that it was issued to a Waffen SS Tiger (Tank) commander on the eastern front and that I (You) were the ONLY source of ammo for it not related to Himmler
Jack, that is one kick ass story. And you are completely correct: sometimes it takes a SHTF scenario to make people really question their ability to defend their loved ones. So many people have that "it will never happen to me; not here; not in my life" attitude... And then just exactly that does happen, and it hits close to home. A man is entitled to his contentions, liberal or otherwise, but many times the folly of such becomes apparent. Thanks for service to this country! Come home safe, stand strong until then, and thanks for the neat story. |
Classic! I am starting one in my neighborhood this week! |
Not for a reluctant new shooter with barely a clue. Sell the dude the Carbine and half a dozen magazines. |
Ed? Is that you? Try selling him a Webley, or something similar. The carbines a good idea, though. He'll probably end up buying some POS that doesn't work, out of the Thrifty Nickel. I'm a bit surprised by his actions, though. Most Nebraska sheep don't believe anything could EVER happen here. Bob |
If he is upset that crime is so bad he has to consider a gun, tell him he should vote Republican next time.
He could certainly do worse than a p38. Excellent firearm. |
Ehh it happens i used to sell cars so i can pull the hard sell if i want However i do not do that with firearms much as i think especially the first purchase is a heavy personal decision it was slow day he was the only one i the shop for that period of time |
