Anything out there just as exciting and fun as BF2?  I have a gift certificate to Best Buy and looking for another PC game. What do you recommend?

Thanks.

You guys should love the expansion, you get to use the.... FN SCAR!

New expansion focuses on special forces.  You will play as SAS, SEALs, Spetsnaz etc.  Some new weapons like G36/FN Scar.  Also there will be ziplines and grapling hooks.  Few new vehicals like the Apache and something like a humvee.  Supposed to be due out before Christmas.

All the info + screenshots you need;

Single player was good for COD, but multiplayer was terrible IMO. 1-3 shots would down someone in single player, while you'd have to empty half a mag into them online.

Not with realism servers. 1 shot with a garand to the midsection easily takes a german out. And its possible to destroy tanks with 1 shot from another.

If you want to try something Sci-Fi, look on the web or in the bargain bin and pick up Descent: Freespace or Freespace 2.  Freespace 2 is possibly the best space-fighter combat sim ever made.  The genre is pretty much dead right now, though.  Nothing much new recently.

Make sure your joystick has a lot of buttons and is programmable.  It'll save hassle.

its like a very large patch that you download.  Like new maps, charachters, weapons...etc. Sometimes a Mod could be an entirely different game.

Try this one out:  Battlefield Nights www.fileplanet.com/156725/150000/fileinfo/Battlefield-2---Battlefield-2-Nights-Mod

there should be some more coming out soon, like Starwars mods...Vietnam mods, WW2 mods...etc

I'm on my first career. it's post D-Day so even just outside of a german base on the french coast the bombers start coming. I took out 10 or 12 planes, mostly sutherlands when one crashed into me and sank me

If it's an FPS game you want then you are only cheating yourself if you haven't played Planetside yet.  Such piddly small scale games like BF2 can't hold a candle.  (ed- You might want to right-click, save as.  The buffer doesn't seem to be working so hot)

Strumgrenadier Galaxy class dropships loading up on the New Comglomerate Sanctuary island.

I play with the New Conglomerate on the Emerald (east coast) server.  Ping times are just fine from San Diego to wherever they are hosting it.

Half Life 2 is pretty good - the story is kind of silly.  You get Counter-Strike Source along with it, which is one heck of a good multiplayer game, but I have not played it for awhile.

You can decomplile/recompile the data files for anything based off of Quake 3 (MOH, COD, etc) by simply unzipping the files, just drag out the files you want to mess with (like the weapons files, you can mod the damages, ranges, accuracy, etc), edit the files in a text editor, reassemble them and re-zip it, making sure you name it something starting with "User-" and ending with ".pk3".  This is how you do modding, best way to learn at first is to download other mods and pick them apart just to see how it works.  Of course, any mod you do that affects weapon performance won't apply if you play on someone else's server, but if you're the server, then it will.

I'm well into Silent Hunter III, and like most people, I was absolutely raving about it when I got it. However, most of my friends and myself as well have relegated it. It's a fantastic and technological achieviement, but it's not a 'classic' in that it will achieve large amounts of playing time over a period of years. Combat Mission and Steel Beasts are both still 'daily players' and I've had them on my hard drive since they came out years ago. (SB Pro PE is getting closer to release, will retail for about $125 and will definitely be worth it. I know, I'm on the beta team!)
