A guy here at work was clearing overgrowth from the edge of the driveway.
Thick weeds, and dirt. Under the carpet of debris, several of these little red/brown balls started rolling out. We are guessing it is a fungus, but we aren't sure. My opinion is that it is a type of puffer mushroom, but I'm not sure. Under the red/brown outer skin, there is a clear jelly like substance. Then a thin white layer, then the green/brown stuff I believe are developing spores. NO, it isn't a squirrel scrotum.

Searching puffer mushrooms lead me to "puffball" mushrooms...
and this isn't one of those. I'm wondering now if it is part of one of the weeds that was hacked down. |

Fungi don't normally have 'stems' like that.
