Oregon to host 1,000 hurricane refugees

SALEM -- Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski is making arrangements to accommodate around 1,000 refugees from the Gulf States.

Hurricane victims wait to be evacuated from the Louisianna Superdome this past week.
Kulongoski received a request Friday from the Federal Emergency Management Agency asking him to help house victims of the massive hurricane, a spokeswoman said.
The governor has directed the Oregon Office of Emergency Management to immediately begin coordinating with relief agencies. The refugees are expected to begin arriving in Portland within the next day or two.
"In the days since Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, Oregonians from every corner of the state have reached out wanting to help," Kulongoski said in a statement. "Our offer has been accepted and now its our time to pull together to help those victims who lost their homes and their communities find some solace so they can regain their strength and begin healing from the tragedy that they — and our nation — have endured."
Oregon officials are working to help secure housing for the victims.

Hopefully, the fed DHS will reimburse for the expenses associated for the care and feeding of the evacuees.

Washington State To Shelter Katrina Evacuees

OLYMPIA - Governor Christine Gregoire announced Sunday that the state is making plans to host up to 2,000 hurricane evacuees.

"We don't know at this point how many people will be coming," Gregoire said, "but we are making plans based on an initial estimate of up to 2,000 people. We don't know the exact timing for their arrival, but expect it will be within the next few days. We will share more information when it becomes available.

Assisting with the plan to host Katrina refugees are state officials, representatives from the city of Seattle, King Pierce and Snohomish Counties, the American Red Cross and many other organizations.

The state of Washington plans to provide shelter, food, medicine and other assistance to people displaced by the hurricane.

And as part of in-processing, all will be registered as Democrats.

It'll be interesting, the summer is winding down and its going to get cold, and rainy, and very wet (like it always does in the fall).  We'll see how their fair.
