Has anybody that's been to NO before all this had problems with crooks?

The biggest problem I had was walking out of the Quarter holding my wife up (they make the drinks strong down there) with my parents following.   Had a street hustler trying to get money out of us.  I knew better.  When he first started his pitch, I told him I wasn't interested.  He saw my wife was a little tipsy and offered something to help.  I told him I didn't think so.  He started again and I politely asked him which part of no did he not understand.  Him (and a few of his friends) then started the shit with my parents.  Trying the "I bet I know where you got your shoes" BS lines.  I finally had to stop and tell him he needed to go the fuck on and leave us the hell alone, still not raising my voice.  Him and his friends got the "deer in the headlights" look and quickly left.  

Before all this stuff after Katrina I had heard horror stories about people getting mugged on dark streets and alleys but never saw it for myself.  I'm hoping that if they rebuild it may get better as most of the crooked cops have bugged out and it's open season on the gangsters.

BTW During the run in with the hustler I did have my Kimber on my side along with my pocket knife.

We were visiting once and someone broke into our car.  I was very young but I remember the broken window.

The two times I was there  there were a lot of street hustler's and one idiot who wanted to know how much "for the two leetle girls." I was with.  The hustler's wanted to know if you wanted anything from drugs to wimenz. There was also an idiot on every street who wanted to bet you he knew "Where you got dem sneakers".

On the plus side the food and music was great.

ETA: Oh yeah there were a lot of "drunks" who were probably pro pickpockets bumping into people.

here is the problem: we know the majority of these people are free-loading welfare suckers.  When given an easy opportunity to comit a crime, they do it!  It sucks.  Now they have nothing to lose and they are all being shipped to Texas.  Sure, we have welfare suckers here, but they did not just go through a shitstorm. But, the kill whitey attitude will bleed over to our own welfare suckers and the crime spree that the NO refugees started will coninue here, bringing along with it our own welfare suckers.

I was there for a school years ago and we took a inner city safari with one of their narcs. Never in my life have I seen so many nonproductive, thuged out pieces of human shit in one place.

Seen the slums of St Louis and Atlanta but NO tops them.

Back in 1992, I spent 2 weeks courtesy of Uncle Sam at the Naval Support Center in Algiers.  I remember the 1st Class telling us about some of the ground rules in NOLA to keep from becoming a statistic.  He even mentioned the one about, 'I bet you I know where you got your shoes...'.

NOLA is a rough town, you just gotta know what areas to avoid and the street urchins to avoid.

I've been teaching self defense for 15 years. A full 50% of the people I have met that have been mugged, have been mugged in NO. IMO it's the place in the nation.

I was born there and spent many summers and Christmas' there... Not to mention vacations.

I myself have never had a problem... The only physical confrontation I ever had was turned out to be with a panhandler or solisitor <sp> (the clowns who had out shit, ask for money for the poor, etc)... This was during the day and he grabbed my GF's arm (to stop us and have a listen,) I started twisting his wrist until shit started popping... We left rapidly.

That said... I guess it depends on how you look, carry yourself, act, if your a tourist, etc. I know of cases involving family members and friends opf family members who have had problems.

A majority of the crime in NOLA was/is black-on-black crime...

Factoring that out, crime in New Orleans was probably no worse than NY, LA, or any other big city.

I was never scared or felt threatened (and I'm a fairly physically unimposing guy,) but I was always alert.

My best friend lived there. He said it was the only places hes lived in the U.S. that he did not feel safe at times walking around in. And hes been to alot of places.

He even mentioned the one about, 'I bet you I know where you got your shoes...'.

What is that all about?  Is it just a ploy to get you to stop and engage in a face-to-face with the goon so he can intimidate you into forking over?  Or is it something else?

They say "I bet I know where you got your shoes" you take the bet (bait) and they say "On your feet" and expect you to pay them.  Most times you pay them and they go away, from what I hear.  Sometimes, you pull your wallet out and when you open the wallet they grab it and run.

I've never had problems walking the dark alleys and lonely streets in the quarter alone or anywhere else in NO.  Either I don't look like a tourist or don't look like easy prey.
