Even though I knew this was coming, I'm getting sick of this attitude.
This country is rapidly becoming a nation of ungrateful leeches(of all races and ethnic origins) who wait on everything to be done for them.

Rap star attacks Bush at benefit
BBC News Saturday, 3 September 2005, 10:03 GMT 11:03

Kanye West's comments were cut from a recorded version of the show
Hip-hop star Kanye West criticised President Bush's response to Hurricane Katrina at a televised benefit concert in New York on Friday.
The show, which raised funds for relief efforts, featured Leonardo DiCaprio, Richard Gere, Glenn Close, Harry Connick Jr and Wynton Marsalis.

But West told the audience: "George Bush doesn't care about black people."

The comment went out live on the US west coast, but was cut from a taped version seen on the east coast.

West also claimed the US was set up "to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off as slow as possible".

He appeared alongside comedian Mike Myers for a 90-second segment which began with Myers speaking of the devastation Katrina has caused to southern states of the US.

But to Myers' surprise, West departed from his script and said: "I hate the way they portray us in the media. If you see a black family, it says they're looting. See a white family, it says they're looking for food."

Cut off

He conceded "the Red Cross is doing everything they can", but said authorities were deliberately holding up getting aid to the Gulf coast.

It would be most unfortunate if the efforts of the artists are overshadowed by one person's opinion

NBC statement
West was cut off mid-speech after he criticised Mr Bush, and the cameras switched to comedian Chris Tucker.

There has been widespread criticism of the US government's response to the storm, which struck on Monday. The scale of the casualties is not yet known, but tens of thousands of people remain in the devastated city of New Orleans while 75,000 people have been forced to take shelter in neighbouring Texas.

NBC, which broadcast the event, said "it would be most unfortunate if the efforts of the artists and the generosity of millions of Americans are overshadowed by one person's opinion". Country star Tim McGraw, who is from Louisiana, sang two songs and said: "I know the citizens that weren't affected by this are gonna stand up and do good things for people."

Aaron Neville - who, like Connick Jr and Marsalis, is from New Orleans - performed Randy Newman's Louisiana 1927 with the chorus "they're trying to wash us away, they're trying to wash us away".

Actresses Hilary Swank and Lindsay Lohan also took part in the concert, while New York governor George Pataki presented the Red Cross with a cheque for $2.5 million (£1.3m) with a promise of further assistance.

I'm not saying anything racist here, just complaining about the "You owe me" attitude that is prevalent.
I just read in the news that when the NG convoys rolled in they were greeted with Catcalls by NO residents. I think they (NG) should turn around and go back home. The attitude of these disaster victims has to be unprecedented.

Have to love the face of  Myers when he says it.

He can say whatever he damn pleases as far as I care, but to use a donation drive as a platform to try to say "its because they are black" is fucking bs. Unless hes spending the money on the airtime and so on he needs to stick to the script.

For those of us in Fl. who remember Andrew, the response there was about the same. Many frustrated people, slow response with help, and looters. I personally do not think the performance of the rescue effort has anything to do with race. I have however seen many racists comments here on Arfcom. Its a good thing that they are not waiting on us for any help.

Just read in another new report that "reverend" Jesse Jackson is saying the "slow response" is because of racism. Groundless. Mississipi and Alabama where many victims were caucasian did not receive aid any faster. The guy should be arrested for inciting riot and civil unrest IMO. This disaster had nothing to do with racism, the speed of the relief effort has nothing to do with racism, and those who are calling it racist should stop no matter their ethnic origin.

I have already donated about $100 of goods and will donate more, my employer has put together a relief effort I'm participating in. Don't be so quick to judge us all. I was living in FL during Andrew, I remember it well.

[rant on] I just can't believe that no one has addressed the fact in such a public way as West's and Jackson's  statements that all New Orleans residents, Black, White, Asian, etc, chose to live in a modern day Atlantis. What did they think would happen when a CAT5 storm hit?
Magical barriers of some sort?

I was just watching an interview with one of the the USACE (US Army corp of Engineers) Generals. Great segment where they were talking about why the levee system protecting N.O. from the sea is only a CAT3 levee system designed to protect against no more than a fast CAT3 storm. They said it was a decision made in the 60s and 70s that was dictated by budgetary constraints, but that IN NO WAY could the levee system withstand a CAT4 or CAT5 storm, even a near miss. Not designed to.

So the NO city and LA state officials were all aware this could (and would) eventually happen. So let me ask you, where is their responsibility for this? What was their plan? Knowing the levees would fail in a CAT4 or higher and doing NOTHING, NOT A DAMN THING to reinforce the levee system to a CAT5 grade other than a few ineffective efforts, instead lining their pockets with casino revenue and expecting the Fed to pick up the tab for the consequences of their bad decisions. Yes, I feel compassion for those trapped in this horrible disaster, but I have nothing but disdain for those officials who in effect caused it with their inaction and now have the outrageous GALL to blame their current predicament on the Federal gov't.

And those media personalities who have the nerve to blame Bush for this personally and cry racism are so out of line it borders on complete blind ignorance. I am no fan of George W., but IMO he did nothing wrong here and has responded as he should. If anyone is to blame for the quagmire, it is the corrupt governments of New Orleans and Louisiana for the last 30 years, present one included.  [/rant off]

I survived Andrew came back after evacuating and spent time trying to survive until power was restored about 5 weeks later, I ate whatever I could I remember when a girlfriend of mine bought a plate of cooked food it tasted like ice cream. National guard showed up about 4 days but were unarmed and helpless against looters and anarchy, I was angry but I was angry at myself for not being prepared. Sure the Red Cross gave us ice and MRE's and I showered on the ground floor with a garden hose. I could not go to work in fact untill I checked in they listed me as missing almost 2 weeks later. I am not rich but I also do not owe anyone anything and more important no one owed me anything. I do not take hurricanes lightly....

Data for NO from the Bureau of the Census.

(race) (number) (% N.O.) (% US)

White  135,956 28.1 75.1%

Black or African American 325,947 67.3 12.3%

American Indian and Alaska Native 991 0.2 0.9%

Asian 10,972 2.3 3.6%

Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander 109  0.0  0.1%

Some other race 4,498 0.9  5.5%

Media heads and TV hounds have complained about the majority of the victims being black.

Seem like the majority of NO is black.

Actors are allowed to be slow-witted without a script, but former stand-up comics should be more capable.

Not the time or the place. Im sure Myers and Tucker had what they REALLY wanted to say floating in their brain at that exact moment. They had class because that was NOT the forum for a war of words. They are trying to run a relief moment.
