My Dad was giving a Grandson (my nephew) a ride in his BMW this week when the kid accidentally cracked a cup holder. Repair bill: $500!

You dont understand.  The Kraut cup holders are multiple part retractable adjustable contraptions.  It took me a few minutes to understand that the little claw will clamp to the size of your cup.  When not in use it will retract and fold. They are also delicate and will break easily I bet the kid hardly touched it.

Truly overengineered.

You can get the parts cheaper if you look online for the OEM parts.  Usually they come as a module that will unscrew out.  There are a few discount BMW parts dealers out there.  Also they have a blank replacement where you put a fake into the dash and it looks like there is no cup holder. I guess the Euro models come with these.

You know what they say at the BMW dealership?  If you have to ask the price,,,,then you can't afford to own one.
