Go, it'll be time off in Purgatory. Carry concealed...the greatest gift you can give those in desperate need of help is to help eliminate some of the "barriers" to relief.

dvr9 - I can't even carry concealed. I moved to MI a year ago from SC and don't have a carry permit now for MI ( did for SC ). Considering the work I might be doing (possible manual labor) it would be extremely difficult to keep a weapon concealed yet easily reachable.
And if I got caught I would be fired. |

If its job, I say carry anyway. I would think the people you go with to help will understand. (took to long to post) Can you not make the money at home working more? |

Funyun (awesome name) no carry is b/c of law (I guess there isn't any right now) and job.
I seriously doubt anyone I will be working with would think very highly about me carrying if they found out. I know one person would try to get me fired. I can't make more $ working more at my current position. I received a promotion a few months back, am making a decent salary for someone out of college for 2 years, but do not make overtime. |

I'd go. I think it'll be just like flying a major airline or riding a train right after a crash. Thats when you will be the safest. everone will be watching everyone and once order is restored it'll be kept with an iron fist.

My company asked me to go down to do work and you can borrow my answer.
"If you are paying for my ammunition, and getting me authorization to open carry my AR, I'll be more then glad to work" Oddly enough they denied my request. |

The not being allowed to be armed thing is BS, but, if you can do it, I would. Helping those who need it is always a good thing, and if your company is willing to pay you...why not.
It will probably be something you will never forget... My company was talking of sending some of us to do air sampling in the subways after 9/11, and I would've went, but we never got the call..... |

By the time you get there, it should be alot more secure than it is right now. Plus, you probably will be able to CCW - who is going to stop you?

I think you should go ahead and give it a go. You can always refuse an assignment or bug-out if it gets too hairy. I expect this thing to burn itself out in a few days due to the lack of food and water for the thugs, and the increasing number of security forces that are inbound. This is a good oppurtunity to help your fellow man and make some bux in the process. If you do go, demand that your company give you the proper immunizations before you leave and increase your life and health insurance while you are there. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

If you can't carry a gun, at least take a good knife. OK, I know it won't help much in a gun fight but there's more concerns than armed thugs down there, which the NG are starting to crack down on.
Me, I'd find a way to carry at least one pistol. |

To clarify if I get caught carrying I won't have a job which would majorly S*CK.
There is no way I can carry a firearm. If I could I would probably go. Did I say there was no way I could carry a firearm? Thanks to everyone for the input. |

I told them that I didn't want to go to NOLA before the storm, there's no way I would go now. And I'm single

My company has already sent some cell techs down. Next week, some of us switch techs may be going down to Covington to get the switch (telecom) going again. It was wiped out.
I have already volunteered to go. There will be an AR carbine and a pistol with me regardless of what they say. |

I don't have a CCW in MI b/c of the time frame that I am a resident here. By the time I was eligible, took the course, waited, and received my permit I would have had the permit for 2 or 3 months and then be moving back to SC. I know I should have gone ahead and gotten the permit but I didn't.

I think your company is jumping the gun. There is not nearly enough command and control in that city to be even remotely prepared to begin any kind of clean-up of he city. They haven't even fixed the flood problem. Once they do that and get the water pumped out of the city, which probably won't be for at least a couple weeks, then (assuming they plan on bringing the city back up to livable standards and not letting it rot) they will probably have publc works running through clearing a path for their electrical and waterworks repairmen to do their thing.
Since the evacuation process seems to be willy nilly at best (still sending buses to Houston and then getting turned away) there doesn't seem to be any kind of organization for determining where they are actually putting all these people. In other words this whole situaton is just barely coming out of chaos. Going there now would just be a hurry up and wait, stepping on one another's toes situation. |

Although I work out of Baton Rouge , I am employed by the same utility company that serves New Orleans . As soon as we are finished with our own area , we will start assisting the areas to the East and South . Our CEO has said that NO ONE will go into that hell hole until it's safe . I won't be carrying
my pistol but I will at least be packing a fresh can of pepper spray . |

UPDATE:
It looks like I am going to go. I will not be in the 'thick' of things. I plan on packing for the trip in a large hiking backpack since it will be easier to carry my belongings. I am also taking a large fanny pack that is big enough to use as a day pack. It carries 2 nalgenes w/ plenty of room to spare. Now my new question: what should I carry in this pack? Remember I can't carry a gun so don't say I should - it is not an option. I'll have a knife, pepper spray, cell phone, 2 liters of water, iodine tablets, energy bars, salt (in case I sweat too much), powdered gatorade, medicine (pepto, advil, bee sting injector since I'm slightly allergic, heavy sun block, insect repellent, pair of radios, extra batteries, full brimmed hat, first aid kit, fairly large white cloth for signalling, signalling mirror, rain gear, extra socks and underwear, extra light shirt and shorts. I think with this in case the worst happens and for some ungodly reason I get stuck outside overnight I'll be OK. Does anyone have any other suggestions as to what I should take? Thanks again. |

I votes "yes, why not?" before noticing "unarmed" in the job description. If CCW is condoned, or you may bring your own weapon, I stand by that choice; otherwise it's a HELL NO.

I will only be in "secured" areas - whatever you define that as, and I will be with groups of people. Probably never less than 5 at a time. I realize that doesn't help with the latest case of the contractors getting shot at but if I am out and about in the aftermath it will not be in New Orleans.
So - what else should I add to my daily carry kit? |

Do not wear shorts bro. Between the skeeters and nasty sharp things with salt water residue...just wear levis or BDUs. Bring a short and long sleeve. Boonie hat is a must. Boots of any kind. No sneakers . Plenty of clean socks and undies. Remeber you will be one ball of walking sweat real quick. Leave the signalling mirror and rain gear. If it rains put a trash bag over your upper torso. Too much crap will make you miserable. Forget the nalgenes...use regular bottled water. When you are empty just throw it on the ground and reload with fresh ones. The less weight the better. Take a small Surefire and plenty of lithium batteries. Lighter and puts out a better beam than any maglight. Been there one two many times.  |

Salt isn't needed. Gatoraid will provide the electrolites you need. Carry at least two knives. One clipped just inside your hip pocket, with a thumb stud and make sure you can open it quickly with one hand....practice that manuver. Carry the other inside your pack. A mulit-tool....SOG or Gerber prefered. +1 on a good LED type light with 123 batteries and get extra batteries. |

Surefires eat batteries and bulbs. Inova X5 LED light runs on the same batteries forever. I use batteries killed in a surefire in mine. Sort of pointless to quibble over gear though, unless you have time to go shopping before you leave.
