Man gets six years for church burglary

LA MARQUE — A La Marque man who left his dentures in the church he burglarized will be visiting his old dentist again — in prison.

Ernest Lynwood Robertson signed a plea agreement Wednesday that will send him to prison for six years for burglarizing the La Marque Presbyterian Church, 2413 Pecos St.

Robertson, 43, broke into the church in the early hours of Oct. 4, prying open a window with a screwdriver. He ransacked the pastor’s office before moving onto the church kitchen, where police later found partially eaten food.

Investigators also found a partial set of dentures, with the name “E. Robertson” and a six-digit number etched into them. That number was Robertson’s prison number. He got the dentures while serving a sentence for burglary, which started in 2000.

Robertson told investigators that another man had planted the dentures in the church.

Prosecutor Donnie Quintanilla said Robertson told him the same thing Wednesday, hours before pleading guilty to burglary of a building. “He definitely changed his tune quickly,” Quintanilla said.

Robertson also took a collection box containing money the church had marked for future food drives.

Police said they found no DNA on the dentures belonging to anyone other than Robertson.
