Does this include the entire Metroplex? How can you carry in your car? On the seat? In the glove compartment? On your person? What's the law on this?

Don't sweat the Dallas PD, it's the Plano, Frisco, Richardson, University Park, any other suburb, etc that you will need to worry about. Dallas PD won't pull you over unless you're seriously breaking the law, like 15-20 mph+ over the speed limit. They have bigger fish to fry than people that don't use their blinkers...

It may come as a surprise to some that starting next month Texans will be allowed to carry handguns in their cars.

Since 1871, carrying a handgun has been illegal in Texas unless the owner had a permit or could prove they were traveling. This created confusion since traveling was never defined.

Texas lawmakers cleared up the confusion in their last session by defining it as driving a private motor vehicle.

This means starting September 1, anyone can drive around with a handgun in their car without a permit. That is as long as they are at least 21 and meet other criteria like not being a gang member. The gun must also be out of sight.

Some law enforcement officials say they fear the law may lead to more gun violence.

How would you advise a gunowner who wants to carry a handgun in his car responsibly stow it? Should it be left in the car? Should it travel with you....discreetly? Do you take it to the car and leave it in there or take it to the car and bring it back into the house after work?

Don't leave anything, REPEAT ANYTHING, in your car in dallas over night. Take it inside your house once you get home from work. I have had my truck broken into twice in the last year here in dallas. All car alarms mean here is that the crooks got to work a little faster to take everything out of your auto.

My question on this, is if you are oulled over, what should you say? "I dont have a CHL but I have a concelled gun in my (glove box, center consol or underseat)"

Personally, I wouldn't volunteer that info. If it's concealed/out of sight, he's going to have to ask for my permission to search my vehicle. And that would be meet with a swift "no"...

Remember this only a clarification of the older law, some idiot cop could still arrest you on a weapons charge. Just now it's much easier to defend yourself in court than the old "I was traveling" arguement.

OK, so basically on my little trip this weekend, shotty in back seat but ill play it cool and leave the pistol in the carry case in the trunk..... Should be ok and not have to worry about it. Of course I dont plan on getting pulled over either. Still need to work on my CHL though. Working nights puts a hender on that crap though.

Yep, just don't leave anything in your car at night. I have had to learn this the hard way. 1st time was my fault, didn't pull the face off my CD player, thought the alarm was enough... WRONG

2nd time was about 4 months later when I left a small, 8-10 CD wallet (the kind that attach to your visor) sitting on my front seat. Once again, the alarm didn't stop them. Smashed the window and was gone in a few seconds. The freak'n window cost more then the CD's they stole.

Moving to Plano as soon as my current lease is up

IMHO not necessary the way the law is written. CHL's are linked to TXDL's. That is why it's a good idea for us to say "Officer I'm a CHL holder and I'm armed, my pistol is XXX, how do you want to procede". We do have to present the license if we are pulled over.

As far as saying anything I would not offer any info unless asked. They still can hook you up, it just clarifies the traveling clause, a defense to prosecution.

Carry it. just make sure it stays concealed.

Will be concelled in the carry case in the trunk... But rifles as in my shotty can still be carried in the passnger cabin in plain site right??????

Funniest thing my CHL instructor said was "Hell you guys can walk down the sidewalk with a loaded rifle, don't mean you won't get asked what you are doing with it though. If you say you are headed to your attorneys office, he said you just might get a police escort there!" Those guys bagged on Fire, EMS and Lawyers all day.

YES.

My truck was broken into TWICE in three weeks...this at a loft with "secure" parking, 8-foot metal fences with razor-wire.

ALSO, some folks have said that the new law only puts the burden of proof on the city/state...so I would be careful about carrying without a CHL.

Yes. You can carry a rifle/shotgun, even in the passenger compartment.

If you are gonna carry a pistol, keep it in the trunk, in a case, seperate form the ammo.

Even if you are right, dosen't mean some hoo-ah MF won't lock you down, take your shit, and you'll have to spend considerable $$$ and time just to prove you were right.

Get a CHL.

My understanding of the law is that it has no age requirements on it besides those limiting ownership. It is legal to own a pistol at 18 in Texas, therefore it should be legal to carry a pistol in your car at the age of 18. Now its illegal to buy a handgun from an ffl until 21 so you would have to aquire the pistol through either a private transfer or as a gift.
