If you are buying new just pick out the model you want and that fits your requirements and you'll be happy. I have an A2 with a 20inch barrel and I love it. Shoots great, accurate, and super reliable. And Bushmasters customer service is wonderful.

It depends on what you want to use the rifle for. If it is just for general purpose or plinking, I would look for either a 16" or 20" rifle with A2 sights. If you would like to use it for varmint hunting and add a scope or would like flexibility, look for the A3 models with the detachable carry handle. You can install a scope on top of the carry handle but ergonomically, IMHO, this is not the best for accuracy.

I would save yourself some money by NOT buying the fluted barrel option.

Target use maybe some varment. Thanks all I think the 20" A2 is in my future.

At least go with the DCM model, the float tube, trigger and match sights will be worth it in the long run. It will be worth the extra money as it will cost more to add these later.
