I was thinking about this during a social studies class. Could the army or marines get by with less combat troops if they were able to increase the lethality of the average infantry man or the infantry squad. Is there a practical way to increase the lethality of the average infantry or the infantry squad.

Would more intensive training help? How about improved weapons is this even possible.

+1. People forget that war is not pretty, and is not designed to cure social woes. War is all about killing people and winning. That's it. Those cameramen send images back here and everybody gets all teary-eyed and boohoos that some wounded insurgent got killed after faking being dead, and they get all weepy if some enemy combatants get humiliated a little bit after American contractors get their heads sawn off for trying to help rebuild a nation's infrastructure. I think we all have a right to know what's going on... but sometimes I feel it's taken too far.

Give them the ability to nuke from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

The problem with increasing lethality and decreasing numbers is you put your eggs in fewer baskets. Say your new squad is 4 people. If one person is hit you lose 25% of your firepower. Whereas, in a traditional structure you're losing about 8%.

Exoskeletons, which are already being developed, will give the infantryman a great advantage in strength, power, and endurance over the enemy.

Adopt the 6.8SPC.....and the XM8 or a Kalashnikov clone shooting the 6.8.

Or get HEAVY bullets.

Better training is a force multiplier. Ability to train and equip indigenous people also is a force multiplier, however that takes time and is dependent upon the motivation factor of the PIQ.

If you really want to increase combat effectiveness though, just get rid of the photogs AND the reporters.....
