Don't know what a CIWS is, but it looks like it is shooting off of the fantail of a carrier or other ship.

Incredibly freakin LOUD, too.

The lounge in nuke berthing on the Enterprise is just below the CIWS mount on the fantail.  The first time I heard it, I didn't even know what it was.  The thing fire so fast, it's just one continous BRRRRRRRRRRRRRP.  I guess it sounds kinda like canvas ripping, only a million times louder.

saw a cool video of a CIWS - missle coming at a ship at like 2000 mph and the thing shredded it- got it at the last sec. (i suppose thats the only time you could get it a t 2k+ mph...)
