I gather most ethnic conflicts are instigated when there are three races/ethnicities involved.

There is the primary, secondary and tertiary.  If the tertiary ever overtakes the secondary in numbers (and gains the secondary’s previous virtual monopoly on preferential treatment) civil conflict becomes likely.

In America think primary = white, secondary = black, tertiary = mexican.
Tertiary is overtaking secondary.  Statistically, America looks like the other places (Balkans, etc) where it has happened.
