The one thing I really regret when I built my house last year is not installing a wood stove flue in the basement.

I've got a propane gas fireplace that does wonders to offset the oil bill. I blast the fireplace for an hour or two a night depending on the weather. Since I have an open concept living room and kitchen, it circulates and heats the entire first floor. BUT....dammit don't I wish I had a wood stove alternative....

I use electricity for the month or two that it gets cool enough to need a little extra heat. When I lived in Maine, we had oil heat, but never used it, too expensive. Wood funace was the way to go (in the 70's and early 80's). Sucked as a kid cutting and stacking 10 to 15 cord of wood though...but I guess my dad was right, it did build some character.

Oil, AKA diesel but cheaper.

It, electric, and wood are the only ones you can get in our neighborhood. We're trying to get gas run to our house to power the range, because electric ranges suck, but the gas company never returns our calls. But we'd probably stick with oil heat anyway.

We don't heat the house normally. The thing probably kicked on four of five times last winter. Now, the AC is electric.

Don't have a fireplace, and propane is for the BBQ.

Electric for a few weeks a year.

Also, I have a gas fireplace that can heat 1/2 the home in a couple minutes.

Admittedly...there are times when living in the great green state of Maine has it's downfalls....

Usually, I'm bitching about how my middle class income is hit the hardest to pay the welfare tab for the apathetic lazy fat fucks that populate 80% of the state.

But come winter time, my groaning switches to heating costs.....it's tough, no doubt about it!

Electric unless it gets really cold, which it doesn't too often. Then I crank up the fireplace and just keep part of the house warm. Saves electricity. I wish I had a wood-burning heater on the hearth like my parents had when I was growing up. MUCH more heat than a fireplace, where most of the heat goes up the chimney. Their heater could heat almost the entire house. My fireplace just keeps the living room and kitchen warm, but I do have high ceilings.

Anyways, im on all electric with heat pump. but up here in NW with wind and trees you definetly need a backup, So i have a wood stove and chords of wood at hand, as well as my generator.......<<<<<boy scout.

Wood!
There is no better heat in my mind.

Costs me less then 100 for a winter when I cut it myself.
Will heat no matter the situation, like loss of power.
Doubles as cook stove if needed

I will heat with wood until I am to old ot load the woodstove!

I'd love to be able to supplement our heating with wood.

I live in a modular home, with no fireplace. It's over a block foundation... basement, half of it is garage.

Is there any way to add that capability somewhat cheaply AND safely?

Electric.
Power is generated from a lake 200 miles away, water comes from a mountain glaciaer.
I get my drinking water from the same place.
