Those that sow to the wind shall reap the whirlwind

By Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

As Hurricane Katrina dismantles Mississippi’s Gulf Coast, it’s worth recalling the central role that Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour played in derailing the Kyoto Protocol and kiboshing President Bush’s iron-clad campaign promise to regulate CO2.

In March of 2001, just two days after EPA Administrator Christie Todd Whitman’s strong statement affirming Bush’s CO2 promise former RNC Chief Barbour responded with an urgent memo to the White House.

Barbour, who had served as RNC Chair and Bush campaign strategist, was now representing the president’s major donors from the fossil fuel industry who had enlisted him to map a Bush energy policy that would be friendly to their interests. His credentials ensured the new administration’s attention.

The document, titled “Bush-Cheney Energy Policy & CO2,” was addressed to Vice President Cheney, whose energy task force was then gearing up, and to several high-ranking officials with strong connections to energy and automotive concerns keenly interested in the carbon dioxide issue, including Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham, Interior Secretary Gale Norton, Commerce Secretary Don Evans, White House chief of staff Andy Card and legislative liaison Nick Calio. Barbour pointedly omitted the names of Whitman and Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill, both of whom were on record supporting CO2 caps. Barbour’s memo chided these administration insiders for trying to address global warming which Barbour dismissed as a radical fringe issue.

“A moment of truth is arriving,” Barbour wrote, “in the form of a decision whether this Administration’s policy will be to regulate and/or tax CO2 as a pollutant. The question is whether environmental policy still prevails over energy policy with Bush-Cheney, as it did with Clinton-Gore.” He derided the idea of regulating CO2 as “eco-extremism,” and chided them for allowing environmental concerns to “trump good energy policy, which the country has lacked for eight years.”

The memo had impact. “It was terse and highly effective, written for people without much time by a person who controls the purse strings for the Republican Party,” said John Walke, a high-ranking air quality official in the Clinton administration.

On March 13, Bush reversed his previous position, announcing he would not back a CO2 restriction using the language and rationale provided by Barbour. Echoing Barbour’s memo, Bush said he opposed mandatory CO2 caps, due to “the incomplete state of scientific knowledge” about global climate change.

Well, the science is clear. This month, a study published in the journal Nature by a renowned MIT climatologist linked the increasing prevalence of destructive hurricanes to human-induced global warming.

Now we are all learning what it’s like to reap the whirlwind of fossil fuel dependence which Barbour and his cronies have encouraged. Our destructive addiction has given us a catastrophic war in the Middle East and--now--Katrina is giving our nation a glimpse of the climate chaos we are bequeathing our children.

In 1998, Republican icon Pat Robertson warned that hurricanes were likely to hit communities that offended God. Perhaps it was Barbour’s memo that caused Katrina, at the last moment, to spare New Orleans and save its worst flailings for the Mississippi coast.

I would say something, but I have nothing to say.

This is just indescribable.

I knew it.  If you are breathing, your gonna be taxed.

I heard on the radio that global warming actually makes it LESS LIKELY to have hurricanes. Hurricanes need warm water to gather strength. Global warming melts the polar ice caps, diluting the oceans with colder water, which LOWERS the overall temps of the oceans.

Global warming DECREASES the likelihood of harsh hurricane seasons.

Quit injecting science and reason into the equation.

Besides, when a Kennedy speaks, you know the answer is grounded in honesty and integrity.

[shrill]Signing on to Kyoto would've stopped this from happening![/shrill]

No.

Global warming is an ever evolving article of faith. It's causes and effects are so broad and massive that any situation on earth is instantly able to be attributed to it, and thusly blamed on those who resist communist "environmental" policies.

Didn't you read the handbook? Blizzards and heat waves are equally attributable to global warming, as are droughts and monsoons, which conveniently makes dimocrats like RFK junior able to get in front of a microphone and blame Republicans for the WEATHER.

This works because we all know that hurricanes, monsoons, droughts, floods, tornadoes, blizzards, and every other type of extreme weather never happened prior to 1930.

This thread reminds me of a year or two ago when Algore held a symposium in NYC in January on the effects of global warming.

It was the coldest day in NYC in 50 years.

I do remember. Interestingly, when I was in grade/grammar school (grades 1-6), the talk in science classes was about the risk of a coming ice age.

By the time I got into high school, the "science" was all about global warming.

Bear in mind that when you hear a dufass liberal start one of those "Global Warming" rants...it has NOTHING to do with "Science" and EVERYTHING to do with treehugger politics. "Global Warming" is much like the Often repeated mantra of the far left dimogeeks: "The need to ban Assault Rifles, FOR THE CHILDREN."

In other words,"Global warming" is a kind of boogeyman to scare dumbfucks. "Cycles of the Earth "Warming" and "Cooling" (Weather wise) is an ongoing process that has been established,Geologicaly, back for as long as several million years.

Nothing to see here folks....move along....just fucktard jihadikrat "the sky is falling"  and "it's GWB's fault".......old stuff.

Unbelievable. But not surprising.

Funny enough, at work a few weeks ago, I met his youngest sister, Kerry Kennedy, the one who used to be married to Andrew Cuomo. I spoke with her for a couple of minutes. She was very nice, seemed very level-headed (for a big-time lib lawyer), and didn't seem to quite fit the mold of the rest of the knuckleheads of her family.

I've met Teddy the K and Joe Kennedy Jr, who don't care about anybody who can't do anything for them at that moment....

She also left Li'l Cuomo a while back in a very messy divorce, and his surname, too.... Her kids, who came along, seemed OK too, if a little shy.

RFK Jr. is a causehead and an utter moonbat, just like most of the clan. They don't know what else to do with themselves. Otherwise, they'd have to (gasp) go out and get real jobs like the rest of us....

RFK has finally proven he's a bigger pos than killer boy Teddy.  This type of exploitation should get him the hottest place in Hell.  Right next to Teddy.  GD the left!!!!!

It was the topic on one of Leneord Nimoy's "In Search Of" shows back in the day.

This is exactly what happens when your dad gets asassinated - you're given instant cred and turn into a raving anti-government loon.  People try and ignore him - but they feel bad for what Sirhan Sirhan did to the family.

That should help lower the gas price too.

Fricking idiots.

Sure we can pay taxes on CO2 right after everyone else in the world (developing nations too) to do it.
