I always have a hard time grasping the idea of an American city that is just ruins.
There's no room in my city of Portland for that type of shit, it would be torn down in a heartbeat and something new would replace it within no time. |

Census data shows Detroit now nation's poorest city
August 30, 2005, 1:18 PM Detroit has risen to the top of the list of the country's most impoverished metropolises, according to the Census Bureau's American Community Survey. The data released Tuesday shows that 33.6 percent of Detroit residents lived at or below the federal poverty line in 2004, the largest percentage of any U.S. city of 250,000 or more people. No other Michigan municipality was among the top 70 poorest cities listed in the survey. The top five were Detroit; El Paso, Texas (28.8 percent); Miami (28.3 percent); Newark, N.J. (28.1 percent); and Atlanta (27.8 percent). Detroit has lost about half its population since a half-century ago, when the city and the American automotive industry were at their peaks. It is now the country's 11th largest city with just over 900,000 residents. Cleveland, which had been the nation's poorest big city, fell from No. 1 to No. 12 on the list, Census Bureau researchers said. The report said the percentage of Cleveland residents living in poverty fell to 23.2 percent from 31.3 percent in last year's report. Nearly half of Detroit's children under age 18 are poor, according to the survey. Among big cities, Detroit, with 47.8 percent of its children living in poverty, trailed only Atlanta. The nation's three most-impoverished counties are all in Texas. Michigan's Wayne County, where Detroit is located, ranked 12th, with 20.1 percent of its residents living in poverty. The poorest state in 2004 was Mississippi, with 21.6 percent of its population living in poverty. That compares with 12.3 percent of the residents of Michigan, which ranked 25th among all states and the District of Columbia. Connecticut and New Hampshire, each with 7.6 percent, were tied as the states with the smallest percentages. You have anti sprawl laws in Portland, in Detroit, no such "luck". Therefore, the money left the city a long time ago. Don't confuse south of 8 mile to the rest of "Detroit". I doubt you have anything like the fancy burbs of Detroit in Portland... |

NO being complete;y fair, you posted some of the finer spots in the BIG "D"...there are worst looking corners! Believe me!
While I ain't pleased with the lack of suppressors or SBRs, I do enjoy much of Michigan...just not Detroit...in fact I cannot think of one reason to ever go there if your not into hookers or blow..... *********** It is strange how you can see the worst blight and poverty imaginable in Detroit and then drive for 20-30 minutes to the suburbs and see neighborhood after neighborhood of $600-800 houses....I mean it's like tract homes for the wealthy.....some developments are a hundred or more brand new houses, 3000-5000 sq ft selling for $600+..... |

Wow looks like I hit a nerve. You may be right about your "fancy" burbs of detroit but there is alot of history here in portland and when that history is restored it passes for fancy around here. A flavor all it's own if you will. |

I lived in the south end of royal oak for most of my life. You would have never known that I was 3 miles from detroit. It is a totally different world when you are north of 8 mile indeed. Some of the bordering cities like Ferndale have come a very long way since I was a kid. Detroit is the most segregated large city in america from what I have read. It is a sad situation down there, and we will see if Kwame gets re-elected. If he does The people of the city will get what they have coming to them. |

The anti sprawl laws in the Portland area have forced ppl. to stay in town. Therefore, there was no way a ghetto could develop like happened in Detroit. The gov't. has forced ppl. to remain in Portland. Metro Detroit is rampant capitalism, powered by the automobile. Someone from Portland, a town where they fought against and won their battle against freeways, could have no idea of how the freeway system in Detroit allowed commuters to live very far away from their work. Portland is very European in how it is governed. Detroit is run by housing developments (that have not stopped in 100 years) and a 80 mph rush hour... |

This is very true. But Detroit has also been the victim of thug mayors for a long time. The current one is a prime example. Archer who was a decent and educated man lasted one term. The suburbs have more money then most cities in the US. Bloomfield Hills alone has multiple millionaires. But Detroit pales when compared to Chicago or even Washington DC. But I have seen parts of NY that is much worse. Even Chicagos southside looks like that as well. |

That's a good point...but you don't even need to go 20-30 minutes. All you have to do is take Jefferson from downtown out to the Pointes...that drive will be the biggest night and day difference you can take in the US... |

Couldn't agree more. It's a disgrace that we Americans let the interiors of our cities rot as and simply push the boundries until we finally abandon the city in mass numbers. We've become spoiled by the vastness of this country but this shit needs to stop. Portland is a beautiful city from what I've heard. I hope to visit someday soon. |

Around here we just turn them into "historical landmarks", nail a plaque on the outside, and stick a little old lady inside and surround her with glass cases for all the papers, rusted guns, and maps the other "historical landmarks" in the area didn't have room for. |
