I took my dog on an early walk around the woods this morning.  I'd already packed up my range bag with my two normal carry pistols, and put it in the trunk of my vehicle.  So, this one time, I decided to go out unarmed.  I typically carry either a Glock 19 or a Kel-Tec .380 loaded with Glasers, depending on what I am wearing at the time.

I've taken my dog through this exact same route literally hundreds of times the past couple of years, so I got careless, thinking, 'nothing's ever happened before, why should something happen today?'  But this morning.......

I almost stepped on this bad boy.  Coral snake, highly poisonous.  The yellow bands differentiate it from the harmless King snake.  First time I've ever seen one of these in this area.  I would have had no compunction about killing it if I'd been armed, but as it was I just had to walk on and be more careful.

This is God's way of telling me I'm not paranoid enough, I suppose.

How does that rhyme go?

Red next to yellow--kill a fellow.  (coral snake)
Red next to black--venom lack   (king snake)

...something like that.

Coral snakes are awfully timid.  You weren't in any danger... they have to chew and chew, IF they bite you, to get the poison into your body.

Of course, if it gets there, you're fucked.

Is that a pic of the actual snake? I would be surprised if you had a camera on you but no CW.

That's basically it.  Also, black nose is coral snake; red nose is scarlet king snake.

Yep, coral snakes are rear fanged. They have to chew on you for it to inject its venom. Thats why most of there victims are young children who where playing with it.

No need to kill that snake you were in no danger unless you picked it up - walk around it and leave it be.  Now if you have young kids who might play with it and it is near the house that is a different story.  But, a shovel would work better than a handgun to dispatch it.

You don't need a gun for taking care of that little guy, just a walking stick.  I usually take care of rattlers and other badies with a thump to the head with a long stick.

South Park

The chewbacca defense -

Ladies and gentlemen of the supposed jury, Chef's attorney would certainly want you to believe that his client wrote "Stinky Britches" ten years ago. And they make a good case. Hell, I almost felt pity myself!

But ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, I have one final thing I want you to consider: Ladies and gentlemen this [pointing to a picture of Chewbacca] is Chewbacca. Chewbacca is a Wookiee from the planet Kashyyyk, but Chewbacca lives on the planet Endor. Now, think about that. THAT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE! Why would a Wookiee—an eight foot tall Wookiee—want to live on Endor with a bunch of two foot tall Ewoks? That does not make sense!

But more important, you have to ask yourself, what does this have to do with this case? Nothing. Ladies and gentlemen, it has nothing to do with this case! It does not make sense!

Look at me, I'm a lawyer defending a major record company, and I'm talkin' about Chewbacca. Does that make sense? Ladies and gentlemen, I am not making any sense. None of this makes sense!

And so you have to remember, when you're in that jury room deliberating and conjugating the Emancipation Proclamation... does it make sense? No! Ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, it does not make sense.

If Chewbacca lived on Endor, you must acquit! The defense rests.

Sorry you missed your chance to draw down on a snake.

A Pre-ban STICK is all you need.  Pointy or otherwise.  Just whack it a few times.  Why would you even want to waste your uber-expensive Glaser ammo on a snake, anyway?

You are higher on th food chain, right?   Break it's spine, skin it, cook it and eat it.   Sheesh

Iknow, I know,- Dupe reply. Brushdog beat me to it.

You need a gun to kill a coral snake?  They are only 1.5ft long and about as calm and docile as any non poisonous snake.
