I can't lay down untill my Nexeum starts working, so bear with me.  The barbeque and Phillipino food are fighting back right now and winning!

Baking soda + waters works instantly. Tastes horrible but works.

Ohhhhh, so you're supposed to drink it.  That explains the incessant burning and funny looks from people.

Not for ARD it doesn't!  Otherwise, my insurance company wouldn't be whining about paying claims!

Do you take Nexium as needed or a daily dose? I have chronic acid reflux and have to take Prilosec daily for it to be effective. In the mean time, you can get by with chewing up 5-6 rolaids and taking a big glass of water. That always works for me.

It does for temporary relief. No it does not provide protection to the lentghs medications will but until those things get working, it provides quick relief.

I can get by with taking it about every other day to every third day.  My doctor told me to take it as often I think that I need it.

I smoke a pipe about twice per week, sometimes weeks in between, and drink only on weekends maybe two per month.  Is that enough to cause acid reflux?

I have found I need to take Prilosec daily to get the full effect. If I skip 2 or 3 days, I have the same problem you are having.

To an extent yes.  Smoking stimulates excess acid release.   Also acidic and spicy foods as well as lying down right after you eat.  Tomato based products will cause all sorts of GERD.  A lot of the remedies recommend will actually cause you to get a reflex GERD.  You'll be sorry.

This thread brings back memories. I was taking Protonix daily and some days it worked and some days it was like I wasn't taking anything. It got to where it was painful and when I went back to the doctor for a refill he said I need to see a gastroenterologist and have a upper endoscopy.

Turns out I had a Hiatal hernia. Over half my stomach was above my diaphragm. I looked at the pictures  but I was a little woozy and it looked like a pink mass to me. I went home and did some research to find out what he was talking about as the doctor didn't have much time to make it clear to me and I wasn't all there anyway.

Later on I decided to have the surgery and they did a laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication:

Surgical repair
A few people with a symptomatic hiatal hernia may need surgery. This is usually considered only when medications and lifestyle changes fail to relieve severe reflux symptoms, or when you have complications such as chronic bleeding or narrowing or obstruction of your esophagus. Large hiatal hernias may also need repair if they cause symptoms such as shortness of breath, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or chest pain.

An operation for a hiatal hernia may involve pulling your stomach down into your abdomen and making the opening in your diaphragm smaller, or reconstructing a weak esophageal sphincter. In some cases this is done using a single incision in your chest wall (thoracotomy) or abdomen (laparotomy). In other cases, your surgeon may insert instruments and a fiber-optic camera through several small incisions in your abdomen. The operation is then performed while your surgeon views the images on a video monitor (laparoscopic surgery).

Laparoscopic surgery generally causes less pain and scarring and requires a shorter hospital stay than thoracotomy or laparotomy, but it's not appropriate for everyone. In addition, hernias may recur more frequently with this procedure than with open surgery.

This was over a year ago I haven't taken even a Rolaid since. There are small side effects such as not drinking carbonated drinks and not being able to puke. My only regret is not having it done sooner.

i was told to not drink water, b/c it dilutes the antacids, and makes them ineffective.

... Get your weight under control, and a lot of these Gastroesophageal reflux disease related problems will go away

... It is believed by some physicians that some of the more popular prescription medicines for acid reflux can reduce your libido and can even lead to impotence

I had a lap Nissen 5 years ago when I was 20. My life has changed completely. I no longer wake up coughing on stomach juice in the middle of the night. I am able to drink carbonated beverages and vomit. The funny thing is that the doc said there was a 50/50 chance that I couldn't burp again. Luckily, he was wrong. Go to a GI doc and get and endoscope done. I highly recommend this surgery.

In other words, +1.

I had a bad case of chronic acid reflux.  It would cause me significant problems each night.  Went to the doctor and got some very expensive pills to take each day that worked.  Took the pills for a couple of years.  Last October I decided to lose weight and went on a South Beach/Weight Watchers type diet and lost 80 lbs. The acid reflux went away almost immediately.  No need to take the pills any more.  I have not had any acid reflux even on a fairly high calorie maintenance diet.
