They have systems for direct fire finding and are using these.  One is acoustic, the other is a sub-,illimeter band phased array that can find the source before it hits.  The acoustic system utilizes a grid of moving directional microphones, tuned for the highly directional upper frequencies associated with a gunshot.  The each sensor has its own GPS for grid formation.  Just like seismographs determine the precise location of an earthquake, this acoustical system finds not only gunfire but also breaking glass and other disturbances.

It is only a matter of time.  Snipers do not last long in MOUT with such detection systems.
