I'm going to need a small handgun that will have to be carried in my pants pocket. I can't do an iwb holster. I really don't want to do ankle holster either.
So what's small and safe, but not a derringer?

If I had the money, I'd get the Rohrbaugh R9S.  It's a lightweight, tiny 9mm and I've read some really good things about them.  Kind of expensive...around $950, but they're very well made.

Keltech .32

It's the size of a wallet, easily carried in a pocket.

They have a version in .380 but they sell so fast they're never in the store.

NAA Mini-Revolver, .22 Mag.  Heard very good things about these guns with regards to serving their intended purpose.  Not really effective at ranges over 10 feet or so because of the sights and the size of the weapon, but not a cheap POS, either.  My uncle has one he carries all the time, he's very happy with his.  He also carries a .357 S&W snubby in a IWB holster at the small of his back.  Works for him, the NAA is what he uses for pocket carry, he has the folding grips that cause the gun to print much like a buck knife in the pocket.

I don't carry much, but when I do, it's usually a Seecamp .32.  Very safe due to a very long trigger pull and DAO.

True, it's not much firepower, but a pistol is still a pistol and is thus a deterent.  Don't listen to those who say, "Why a .32 could bounce off my skull!  Carrying a Seecamp is generally the result of a decision of 'it's either that or not carry at all'.  It's more of a life jacket than anything.

ETA:  It's suprisingly violent to shoot.  The combination of 2 finger grip (barely at that) and light weight makes the .32 seem much stronger than it really is.

The Rohrbaugh is a tiny fraction smaller than the Kahr PM9, but costs nearly twice as much. The R9 also has the funky heel mag release.

I pocket carry my PM9 about half the time, and IWB the other half. When I pocket carry, it is in a Desantis Nemesis holster. Today was a pocket carry day.

My Keltec P32 has been totally reliable. Great little guns and you hardly notice carrying it. I have pocket knives that weigh more than this little pistol. Pretty accurate out to about 10 yards. There is nothing like it because it only weighs 9 ounces loaded with 8 rounds of .32 acp.

ETA: Keltec also has awesome customer service, something most companies sorely lack these days. If your gun does'nt work, they WILL make it right.

I carry a North American Arms Guardian in .380 as a back up for my EDC, which is a Para Ordnance C7-.45 LDA. I also carry it when the weather and my clothing don't allow me to carry the full size Para. The Guardian is similar to the Seecamp and a bit less expensive. I have two holsters that I use. The primary is a back pocket holster made by Pocket Holsters.com:

www.pocketholsters.com/

My other holster is a front pocket holster by K&D Holsters:

A .38 needs a big pocket!

I normally use a NAA .22 magnum for a pocket gun. It's small enough to not print too badly when worn in a special wallet holster.

Even a tiny Beretta 22a prints pretty well in a pair of jeans. I was walking the dog around the 'hood tonight wearing one as the NAA was in the truck. Very easy to see as it's heavy enough to be nothing but a gun.

I have a Taurus 85 ultra-light .38+P revolver that's as light as they come but you might as well have a brick in your pocket as it's cylinder prints and it's pretty darn big. Makes a perfect ISWB revolver but not for a pocket.

A "J" frame revolver hides well in all my Levi's jeans.
You just need to use a good holster.
Don't carry it in the picket with a holster as it will print and can be difficult to draw.

The cylinder nor the gun will print if you have a good pocket holster. I have been carrying a lightweight .38 for years in the pocket with no problems.

The Kel-Tec P32 and P3AT are excellent for the price (around $200).

If you're not happy with either .32 ACP or .380 ACP for their lacking terminal effeciency, I would have to agree that you look at the Kahr PM9.

But it's hard to beat the Kel-Tecs from a carry perspective. They're tiny and carry better then any other pistol I know.

I like the Kahr PM40 myself.  5+1 of 40 in a pocket sized gun (same size as the PM9, just a little larger than the Rohrbaugh).  However not for the recoil sensitive, on the other hand way less recoil than a J frame 357
