OK, first off I'm not one of those who views child exposure to porn as some traumatic experience on par with be molested. And as is generally well known I'm not one who thinks things like porn need to be heavily restricted to protect the "moral fiber" of our country. And I think finding a Playboy around 12-13 years of age is an important rite of passage in some respects.

But I am also honest.

And I can tell you with great certainty that kids today have much greater and easier access to porn than ever before.

When I was a kid getting porn required effort. Lord help you if you lived in a "dry house" with a father who didn't subscribe to Playboy. This greatly limited your porn opportunities. My father was kinda boring and only picked up a copy of National Lampoon (Playboy lite) on occassion.

This meant I had to barter with other kids for the occassional Playboy or Penthouse when I wanted to explore the mysteries of the vagina. Adult videos were unheard of when I was a kid and the closest thing we had was watching H.O.T.S. late at night on HBO when we got cable TV around 1979.

In fact I learned more about sex and girls from actual direct contact with females than I did from Playboy or TV.

Today kids have it pretty easy when it comes to porn. Any 12 or 13 year old with an internet connection can usually navigate right past any and all parental blocks on any computer as easily as we unscrambled the movie cable channels on the first cable boxes in the dawn of cable TV.

And kids armed with their own cell phones regularly download and send porn to one another.

And this would all be pretty harmless if we were talking about "boobies."

The problem is there is some shit on the internet that makes grown men say "Geezus what the hell is wrong with these people?"

Even worse is the sick fuckers who target adult content (acceptable and otherwise) to children by imbedding words like "Disney" into their site so a google search or mistyped URL brings kids to "Barny's Beastiality Page."

If I had kids I certainly wouldn't want them exposed to that shit at all. Hell I don't even want to see that shit and I am an adult with a general interest in sexual content.

And quite honestly if I had kids I wouldn't let them surf Playboy.com. It's not that I think anything in Playboy will be damaging to them but I'm not going to give them consent either at a formative age.

Besides they should have to work to see boobies like I did as a kid.

When I was a teenager, we had Club magazine.

I'm still traumatized.  

Some of the porn I have seen shocked me. I can't imagine that it would be particularly healthy for a 12 or 13 year-old kid to view very much of it, especially with noone around to tell them that that shit ain't normal.

Unlike some, I have no problem with non-sexual nudity. i.e., if somebody walks from the shower to their bedroom naked or changes their swimsuit in the same room with their family, I don't see anything wrong with that. It's when someone is nude for the express purpose of sexually exciting someone that I have a problem with it.

That said, I wouldn't have a problem if my kid went online and looked for pictures of boobies AFTER hitting puberty. He's curious and I know what I went through at that age, so I view it as relatively harmless. What I don't like is the idea of my kid seeing actual sex scenes, beastiality, S&M, homosexuality, and all that other perverted deviancy. Naked boobies, okay in moderation. Hardcore or deviant behavior, yeah, fuck that shit.

The way I see it, the only solution is to maintain an open relationship with your kid and drive home the idea that nudity and talking about sex ISN'T wrong. That's why so many kids are getting STD's, unwanted pregnancies, etc. They're too embarressed to become informed about it and what they learn comes from equally ignorant people or people taking advantage of them. Then they get screwed up. I want my kids raised in an environment where they're confident enough to ask me about anything and get a straight answer. And if little Billy wants to know what boobies look like, well, that can be covered at the approriate time and in the approriate manner.

And God help any child of mine who has sex out of wedlock. I'll make them WISH I'd kill 'em.

I enjoy porn, I won't lie.  But there was none in my household, considering my father is a pastor.  I saw my first porn at age 19, and as weird asit may sound, I'm glad I didn't see it until then.

Yup. I'd rather give my kids all the facts BEFORE they get indoctrinated into the stupidity of pre-marital sex.

I also don't mind them occassionally looking at porn. But frankly, there's too much out there they don't need to see yet and too much weird shit they don't need to see PERIOD.

Interesting thing I learned while doing some research years back: children raised by nudists are more confident in their physical appearance (in general), better educated in terms of human anatomy and sexuality, and nearly five times less likely to engage in extra-marital relations than other kids in their age group. They already know all the facts and they never felt they couldn't ask their parents about anything. They grew up educated and confident.

That said, while I again have no problem with non-sexual nudity, there's no way I'm raising my family as nudists. That's just too weird for me.

I don't want to shelter my kids from the facts but at the same time, I don't want to do what my friend's dad did when he turned 13.  He threw a pack of condoms at him and said "Have at it, kid."  That was the extent of their birds & bees talk.

Get used to it folks. Porn is just another form of information and the Internet will make all information available to everyone. If you think you are going to stop it in the Information Age, then you are seriously deluded.

Frankly, it doesn't bother me that much. Yeah, some of it is disgusting and kids would be better off without it, but I notice that an awful lot of my friends spent most of their teen years actively seeking out any porn they could find and they didn't turn into raging perverts. In fact, some of them even regarded it as educational -- in the respect that their wives probably benefited from the fact that they had a little more knowledge what to do down there.

They had a show on Discovery channel or one of the others about it. They interviewed a number of teenagers and found that they had all seen porn in large quantities, including the "unusual" stuff.  None of them said they thought they were harmed by it and most seemed pretty bored by the whole thing.

IIRC, the rates of rape in Denmark went down after they took the wraps off all porn, too.

It seems to indicate that merely looking at pictures or reading something is rarely permanently harmful.

Yeah, this is the old "gateway" theory. Any little excitement inevitably creates a need for bigger and stronger excitement.  Circa 1910, they believed that snacking between meals and eating "mexicanized" (spicy) food would inevitably lead to a craving for bigger and better excitement -- which meant drug addiction.

In short, it is a load of crap. Research has shown that the people most likely to wind up with serious sexual problems as adults are those who were taught that it is dirty and sinful and weren't given much exposure to sexual knowledge as kids. I remember reading about one study of rapists where they found that large numbers of them could not even accurately describe female genitalia. They simply didn't have any clue what women were about, or how to relate to them.

You may note that the rape rates went down in Denmark after they did this, indicating that it probably stopped some people from going on to more extreme things.
