is this about to be a coming trend? just it was something like 2.74 per gallon including taxes.
Whatch for the lines to form now. Who's gonna ship gas there if they have to sell it at a loss?
More people would get it if that book wasn't so long and windy. |
Caps are a joke, but drop the state tax and I'll save 45 cents a gallon.
Yeah, why ship gas to Hawaii now? |
Not blaming Bush, but I would have loved to see him drop the Fed Gas tax for a while. That would have dropped the price close to 40 cents a gallon. |
Can you imagine the leftist outcry if Bush did something so despicable as lower taxes?
I bet the DU would implode! Libs would be spinning out of control like the demons from "Jacob's Ladder." |
That'd give us a break for a couple of days. The coutries selling it to us would still make the same..... I don't see how capping the wholesale price does anything long term. NY is thinking about it. |
Wasn't the cap just on the Wholesale price?
They said this morning that the Retail price would not have a cap on it. BigDozer66 |
he wont. about as much chance as he'll do that as secure the borders |
If I read correctly, the cap isn't a fixed dollar amount. It floats based on some average or formula of average prices on the mainland. So if gas prices go up, the cap goes up. I have heard people in Hawaii complain that the gas suplier there is known for price gouging. I think this law was an attempt to stop that. not sure how successful it'll be though. And if it doesn't work right, gas may stop flowing there.
uhh, sorry. Just had a flashback to a 5 block line back in the 70's. I am better now. Thanks, Carter! |
OK, so I searched for "Hawaii", not HI-
I think they'll be distilling coconut juice and sugar cane. Fortunately they don't have far to BO when the S hits the radiator fan. |
I would rather they raise the tax on gas by 60 cents to a dollar and use the money for alternative energy research and implementation. |

don't know the details just caught blurb on the news about it.
didn't they do this a few years ago? mike |
Oh, I got it, alright. Funny i was thinking about that when I saw the title. |
What, the $6 Billion they just got in the energy bill isn't enough? How about a break for those of us that are footing the bill?? |
Oh, my God, that looks like a shitburger of a movie right there. Burgess Meredith as a fighter pilot?? Whoever wrote that had an enormous bag of weed. |
THATS RIGHT!! We've been here before. Remember the energy crisis in the '70s?? The economic crisis was brought on by caps imposed by Nixon and Carter. Shok |

Aloha! to gas price cap in Hawaii New law caps pre-tax wholesale gasoline costs in an attempt to keep pump prices down. August 25, 2005: 11:14 AM EDT NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Hawaii issued a list of wholesale price caps for gasoline, the state Public Utilities Commission said, amid this month's record-breaking run up in retail gas that saw island residents paying some of the highest prices in the nation. This marks the first state cap on gasoline prices since the 1970s energy crisis, when the average inflation-adjusted price of a gallon of regular unleaded hit $3. Hawaii's recently enacted gas cap law goes into effect on September 1, with the pre-tax wholesale cap in Honolulu set at $2.1578 cents. AAA said gasoline hit a record high Monday with the national average price at $2.614 for a gallon of regular unleaded. Hawaii had the highest average price Monday at $2.824, 21 cents higher than the new record and within reach of the inflation-adjusted high. Higher-than-average taxes on gasoline in Hawaii contribute to those high prices. The state levies a 16 cent per gallon tax, and various local authorities add on other taxes. In Honolulu, for example, total state, federal and local gas taxes amount to about 53 cents per gallon, one of the highest rates in the United States. The national average, according to the American Petroleum Institute, is about 42 cents per gallon. The new price-control law states that no manufacturer or wholesaler may sell regular unleaded to a retail gas station or another wholesaler for more than the maximum pre-tax wholesale price set each week by the state for each Hawaiian island. According to local media, proponents of the law say it was created to keep Hawaii's refiners from taking advantage of the isolated market by charging high prices as crude costs rise and not lowering prices to reflect dips in crude costs. In filings with the Public Utilities Commission, three oil companies -- Shell Oil Co., Tesoro Hawaii and Chevron USA -- tried to delay the law, saying more studies were needed to determine how it would effect the economy and consumers. Hawaii's Star Bulletin reported that Governor Linda Lingle (R) is an opponent of the caps. The newspaper said Lingle believes it would be better to force oil companies to open their books and show consumers how much money they make at each stage of business. "It's a feeling people have that they're being gouged. I think that's what bothers people most, is that they feel they're being charged unfairly simply because we have no other choice," she told the newspaper. Other critics say the gasoline caps could result in shortages if suppliers leave the island for better profit margins elsewhere. |

Ding Ding Ding! We have a winner here! |

As I used to get up at o-dark thirty, drive to the gas station and sit in a blocks long line formed well before dawn to put gas in my parent's cars (on odd and even days, remember?) I can say younger people have no fucking idea what chaos imposing caps in a free market can wreak. |

Actually, A F4 was never in "The Last Chase". The aircraft that Burgess Meredith flew was a F-86 Sabre. Vulcan94 |

What did the Sabre run on? |

It's futile, like when the North Carolina legislature declared NC to be an "ant-free state".
This I gotta hear. |

This sounds a lot like the "so-called" de-regulated electricity market in CA. When a crunch comes the gamers are ready to push all the buttons, some legal and some not.
If Hawaii has a special formula for their gas they'll play hell getting some other importers and refineries to replace their present ones, if they decide to curtail business due to wholesale price restrictions. |
What? There's not one single shareholder in that state that gets financials? |
Funny, the govt doesn't do a little "sacrificing" on their part by cutting the taxes on gasoline but place the burden mainly on the privatize sector. Personally, if the govt is truely bonevelent, they should buy/build their own oil/gasoline refineary, and sell at a price that the the govt deems fair and equitable. But of course the low-income and disadvantaged will have first dibs, and whatever is left over, is available to the masses(ie the proliteriate in commie speak)
I thought this was brought about by the OPEC oil embargo. I'm not old enough to remember. |
I remember the long gas lines of the 70s although I never had to sit in them. You see, I was in Canada where gas was plentiful.
Well, you're right about the lines, but not about the loss. Even at the capped price it would sell for a profit, but why would they sell it there for a lesser profit than someplace where there is no price cap?? ----------------------------- An oil 'crisis'? by Thomas Sowell August 23, 2005 ----------------------------- An oil 'crisis'?: part II by Thomas Sowell August 24, 2005 |

Hawaii, the only place in America left of California.
Yippee for command economy. And I always thought we won the cold war... eta: and this is a perfect example of what I was saying to a friend of mine the other day. Most Americans ARE socialists. If/When the gas prices reach 6 bucks a gallon, you watch. People around the country are going to be saying "The Feds should DO something about this!! We need gas price caps!!" |
The government could help us all out by immediately dropping the tax on gasoline.
The government makes far more money per gallon of gas than the producers, wholesalers, and retailers combined. |
