Hello all.  I just got done terminating a Trojan Horse (I hope I got all of it).  I used a variety of antivirus programs including Hijack This.  Unfortunately, I'm a computer novice so don't know what processes to kil and which to leave alone.  I don't know how to read the logfile.  It's rather long so I will use the second post in this thread for the log alone.

I may have inadvertently eliminated something I need.  I lost my regular desktop background in the attack and in trying to get it back, I right click on the desktop, choose properties and then the background tab.  When I do that, the choices for desktop background are all greyed out.  I can't select a new background.  The attack left me with the standard blue.  I'm thinking I may have accidentally elminated something to make the background choice work.  Please help.  Thanks.

FWIW I have never used hijak this and cant tell you how to use it. I am just going by what I recognise from your registry. I am sure someone here knows better and will show you how to use HJT

Well well well.  I just had this little guy: C:\WINDOWS\system32\winacpi.dll BackDoor-CLK.dll make a return appearance.  Although, this time my Virus Scan On-Access Scan deleted it.  When the problem initially occurred, the trojan of course deleted my antivirus or at least stopped it from working.  I was able to get that program and ad aware back online earlier today.  I thought I had taken you out you little bastard! I'll run Hijack This! again and see if it finds anything that's returned.

Thank you so much for that link.  I didn't even know it existed.  I found one threat remind XP.exe or something like that.  I deleted that little punk.   Hopefully that fixed it, will attempt a restart and will see if it comes back.

Atleast you don't have Bookedspace running wreckless on your PC.  That damn malware is causing my parents and their PC no end of grief.  And worse it's calling into question my credentials as a computer nerd.  

That damn bit of code is the most resilent peice of malware I've ever seen.  It's impervious to N. Antivirus, Adaware, Spybot and Hijack This!, even in Safe Mode.  Manual removal is a real bear too as it is distributed within multiple locations including system32 and several spots in the registry which call for reinstalls at startup.  

I think I've eliminated the problem in it's intireity.  I was over on the Castle Cop Forum and was looking at some of the other threads.  I was reading one that didn't deal with my problem in the least but it mentioned using a product called Spybot Search and Destroy.  I decided to give that program a whirl.  I downloaded it and ran it.  It found 1 instance (a registry entry) of Spy Sheriff Still running.  It also found a few other things (unfortunately, I can't remember what they are) that were a problem.  Spybot also found your average run of the mill tracking cookies.  I had to run SBSD a couple of times to get rid of everything.  But once I did that, my Battlefield 2 desktop background was automatically restored.  After my background was restored, I did a restart to try and see if Spysheriff would return (I've heard that some problems can turn themselves on again, so to speak, on restart)  that was not the case here, nothing returned.  I think the problem is over.  I'll run SpyBot in the morning again and through out the day tommorrow to make sure the problem does not return, but I suspect it won't.  Thank you all for your help.
