I just read this novel by Douglas Preston called The Reliquary; in it there's a virtual maze of century-old subways, cellars, service tunnels and all kinds of other chambers underground. There's this big underground community of homeless there, too.
In the author notes he says that something like this exists in reality, just on a smaller scale. Is there really a labyrinth of old tunnels, sewers and other passageways under NEw York that nobody has mapped out? And are there really underground communities of thousands of homeless living under New York City, families and all? |

lol, no doubt! There's a guy I know who, for the life of him, wouldn't believe my brother and I regarding the existence of that movie. |

There are websites about sort of semi abandoned sections of NYC that people have explored and posted pictures of, not that dramatic though.
Seattle is supposed to have a section of old shops that were built over after a fire or something. |

The bedrock is real close to the surface at the lower end of Manhattan, perfect place to build skyscrapers. |

Thats where the crazies live. You need a sweet Ingram M10 .45 with a Simmons 3X9 scope on it to get through there.

Seattle sank and was built over. If you go downtown you can get a tour of the Seattle Underground. |

Seems to me there are dozens of movies & TV that take place in mythic abandoned New York tunnels.
All I can think of are Mimic, CHUD, Superman (Lex's lair) Beauty & the Beast with Linda Hamilton . Any others ? |

Probably are lots of service tunnels, etc. Probably some old subway tunnels and there are lots of subway tunnels being used.
Also there are huge tunnels bringing water down from the mountains that are north west of nyc. The men who work in those tunnels are called 'sand hogs', and those high paying jobs go to the sons, grandsons and nephews of previous sand hogs. Granite is under mid-town and down-town. The tall buildings are in the middle of manhattan and down at the south end because the granite provides a firm foundation for those tall buildings. Between mid town and down town there is gravel underlying the surface...so there are no tall buildings there. Granite is under the gravel, but too far down to build tall buildings on. Same for Central Park and northward. Yes, there are some granite outcroppings in Central Park. |

Any chance you all can make it sink again ?? |
