IIRC (and I may not) the TM says motor oil can be used as a field expedient.

I use Mobil 1, from what I've read its very similar to many of the expensive gun oils.  And whatever you do, dont use CLP, unless you want a jammomatic in dusty (desert) conditions.

Take some CLP, put it on a tablespoon and put it under a candle. Do the same with some heavy weight Mobil 1 or Mobile 1 transmission oil. Mobil 1 spanks its ass all day.

I've used Mobil 1 many times in my AR15. The crud just wipes away!

So, can I use Hoppe's #9 as a replacement for 2-stroke oil for my Weed-Eater or what?

I have a bunch of AR's and shoot them and a bunch of other guns quite a bit. I also fix all my dumb ass friends guns when they mess them up . I buy my CLP in a 16 oz bottle and pour it off into a little plastic bottle for day to day use. I have been useing CLP for three or four years and although I suppose I bought a couple of small bottles before I found the bigger one I have yet to crack the second bottle that I have on hand for backup. Why should I mess around to save a couple of bucks when I am only spending 6 or seven bucks a year on the CLP. If the small bottles are too expensive for you just hunt around and buy the bigger size. When I find something that works well , (Breakfree CLP works well for me! ) Don't mess around !

AIRSOFT, LOL.  Seriously, though, um, I wouldn't be using motor oil on an AR.  Motor oil, like, heavier weights IIRC, they say work well for an AK, but not an AR.  I'd be nice to an AR if I had one and only use good stuff, like miltech, maybe CLP if I was poor and had to stick with GI-type stuff.

In non-dusty environments, ie from home to range & back, I will use motor oil. For dusty condition, probably Miltec.

Test---------------------

Take 1ea piece of cold rolled sheetmetal. Clean by sandblasting or sand with fine sandpaper

Wipe with acetone or brake cleaner

Wipe an area with Mobil1

Wipe an area with CLP

Place sheetmetal outside in moist area and lightly spray with water multi times per day

Note which area starts to rust first and how quickly the rust forms

Report back here with your findings...

Once again I am reminded why it is I prefer buying new in box unmolested and otherwise unfuckedover firearms from a dealer who is too damn lazy to spiff them up with Mobile 1 or WD-40.

Does Bushmaster use Mobile 1?
Does Armalite or Colt buy that shit by the 55 gallon drum?

No?

Why is that I wonder?

My Bushie AR-15 and my Armalite AR-10... heck, in fact all of my other guns, have been running FOR YEARS and thousands of rounds on Mobil 1.  No unusal wear any place on any of my guns.

This has gotta be the most beat up subject since 9mm vs. 45acp.

Oil is essentially just oil.

Not in the -10 or the -23&P they both indicate CLP, or LAW (in arctic conditions) of if CLP is not available then LSA is to be used.

Has anyone tried Royal Purple Synthetic?

Its for high performance cars, Maybe more thrusts per squeeze than Mobil 1 in those hi speed low drag situations?

This is an interesting read

MILITEC-1 vs CLP: HIGH STRESS TEST

Here's the highlights:

D. Degradation of Performance:

Four out of six CLP lubricated weapons malfunctioned sooner than the MILITEC-1 lubricated weapons. One MILITEC-1 lubricated weapon encountered malfunctions at a lower round count than the CLP test weapons. The GLOCK 22C pistols had no failures throughout the test.

1. Two Beretta 9mms were treated with MILITEC-1. One had no failures until 3312 rounds were fired, the other had no failures throughout the test. One Beretta 9mm treated with CLP encountered jamming beginning at 380 rounds, with 11 successive jams, and the test was stopped for recurrent jamming at 1850 rounds. The second Beretta 9mm treated with CLP started jamming at 1983 rounds with 6 successive jams, but continued to fire until test end.

2. The Colt M16-A2 5.56mm treated with CLP encountered a jam at 1093 rounds with and continuous jams thereafter, until total failure at 1570 rounds. The M16-A2 treated with MILITEC-1 did not incur a jam until firing 3954 blanks.

(With blank rounds becoming more significant in military training, this could be a great time and money saver for the U.S. Armed Forces. Almost double the rounds were fired without problems. Militec Incorporated.)

3. No failures were encountered while firing the GLOCK cal. .40 pistols.

Do you have to change the oil every 6000 miles too?
And just where is the dipstick?

And yes I have used field expedient motor oil.  Specifically 30 weight because the jackass running the M-60 machine gun range didn't know enough to have shit on hand.  Tankers!, they can grease, lube and oil with the best of them but can't remember to bring CLP for the M2s and the the M60s.  I thought it was funny, lubing machine guns w/ a five gallon can of motor oil.  Definitely won't fit in the buttstock of the M16 or AR.  And this was from the unit that would cross loan 3 or 4 trucks (loaded) to other units to hide literally tons of excess CLP, parts, oil, etc. from the Inspector General.

I found the motor oil to work just fine on the M-60.  I would have expected some tarring on the bolt but it didn't happen.
