simple enough question!  Can be bolt, semi, single shot, doesn't matter.  shooting 3-600 yards. under 600$ not including scope.

Reading great things about Savage's rifles and their Accu-Trigger. Very good value.

Savage

between their barrel mounting method and the accutrigger, it's the way to go.

Remington VS (discontinued but you can find em all over gunbroker for 579)

Or a savage FP 110.

I'd have to say a Remington 700 VLS.  I have one and with handloads I can consistently shoot 2 to 2-1/2" 5 shot groups at 400 yards.

I've seen them regularly for as little as $579.

Plus imho it is damn good looking...

A neighbor of mine just bought a Rossi .308 single shot and put a nice scope on it for about $500. He says it shoots as good as his Browning. He said the scope cost more than the rifle though, I guess optics matter as much as rifle.

My savage is a .270, cost the same as teh 308, I love it, I'm happy with the pre-accutrigger.

What I've been reading is the 10fp-LE2.  10fp is the basic package.  The LE2 has some extra accurizing stuff done to it.

i like the fac tthat the savages come with the free floating heavy barrel and accutrigger, but the stock looks damned uncomfortable.  I'm not so comfortable with traditional rifle stocks cause I think I have a really short thumb. I see on impact guns they have a macmillan option but that bumps me up to 800 bucks....

+1, even the non-accutrigger models are very accurate and are easily upgraded by an adjustable trigger. I had an older model 10 and it shot like a champ. The stock never really bothered me and is a non-factor for most shooting. I'd replace it for extreme long range shooting but I could say the same for any sub $1000 rifle.

I'm not going extreme shooting.  I'm reasonable.  300 yards max, want to be able to go a littlelonger though.
