The social contract between the governed and the government, between authority and citizenry, has become degraded and unbalanced. Instead of asking what our duty or responsibility might be in any given situation, we demand to know what are our privileges and rights.

Fuck, I think this guy might be on to something.

Uuuhhh, no.

Sounds like a bunch of socialist bullshit to me.  The only binding duty i have to anyone else is to leave them the fuck alone.  If I choose to go above and beyond that then I am a good man.  If not, you have no moral perrogative to physically coerce me to do anything.

You need to go back an re-read that article.  That guy is a fucking duechse-bag.  He is the enemy.

ETA:

I can't believe this fucking article.  So now I have a dysfunctional fetish because I demand to simply be left the fuck alone.  BS

Its my right to be taken care of by the government. vs.  Its my responsibility to provide for myself and my family.

Its my right to do whatever the fuck I want regardless of consequences.  vs.  The responsibility to not involve others in my dysfunction.

I think the point of the article was more about people excercising their right to be a piece of shit instead of sackin' up and taking personal responsibility for the things they do.

I think he is the token liberal writer at the Sun. He is not, nor will he ever be married.

The same applies to self-defence. We've all heard stories of people like the corner store owner who grew tired of repeated burglaries at his business, who fights back against the criminals with, say, a baseball bat.

In such cases, chances are it's the owners who will be charged. Too often, the rights of thieves outweigh the rights -- and responsibilities -- of citizens to protect their own property and livelihoods.

Please explain how this concept is liberal.

For a Canadian, this guy sounds pretty conservative.

ETA: Doublefeed beat me to it.
