I posted here because I would like an answer fairly fast as I found this at a local pawn shop. Its an ITHACA 1911a1 has the US gov and us army stamps on the side as well as FJA proof mark. Now heres the thing I can figure out the serial number is 138xxxx I cant find a list with that on it..... The pistol appears to be in good shape there is obvious holster wear but the barrel is CRISP I mean CRISP. How do I tell if the barrel is original? Is it worth the $500 price tag? thanks a ton guys.

In good condition, it is EASILY worth $500 - probably significantly more than that.

If it's a mismatched frame and slide, it's STILL easily worth $500 in good condition.

Buy it !!  If you don't like it, I'll give you $600 for it

Don't listen to him,  it's worthless.  Send it to me and I'll be sure and keep it out of the market so that these POS weapons don't possibly get in the hands of someone that could rely on them.

Go in with $500, offer $400 and say something about the holster wear.

If you get it for $400 buy yourself some beer and go home and clean it.

But $500 is definitely a good going price.

Look here for serial number ranges:

www.sightm1911.com/1911Production.htm

It MIGHT be a Remington Rand frame (from 1943) with an Ithaca slide.  In other words, when it went through an arsenal at some point, things got mixed up.

No the frame is clearly marked ITHACA

During the war some frames where mismatched by the Armed Forces, so although it might be mismatched, it is still original.

Ok cool guys thanks....The thing that makes it even sweeter is the fact it will complete my WWII reenacting impression nicely!

138xxxx is the serial number range for Remington Rand in 1943.

Most 1911s were rebuilt after the war and little attention was paid to keeping parts from one manufacturer with the same pistol as parts were interchangeable.

Guys I got it I will post pics later tonite the serial number is 1304xxx That makes it a Remington Ran. the slide is ITHICA. So its not totally matching but its all WWII. I am very happy as I got it for $460 out the door! Its a nice looking pistol and I still cant believe I got it for that price. Although the grips arent original I am sure I can find some on ebay.

ETA: It also came with a usgi mag

Thats a good deal my friend, even if its not matching. You can get the correct grips from Simpson pretty reasonable. What does the BBL have marked on it? Should be HS marked. Either way if it's in decent shape with a good BBL you did very good. Congrats.

Checked my barrel out it appears its a very early early Remington Rand because of the COLT .45 AUTO mark on the chamber as qouted from coolgunsite.com " Very early Remington Rands (with “NEW YORK” marked slides and Type II) normally have “Colt .45 AUTO” barrels."

Even though I got a kind of mixed parts gun it still is cool and well worth the price in my opinion.

Cool. Don't &%^$#@# it all night. [Per another topic] If the grip screws are very tight soak it down with Kroil front and back[inside the gripframe/mag hsg, tap the screw heads with a hard dowel and hammer and they should come out OK. Now imagine where it MIGHT have been......... Grats.

Nice deal man, if I saw a USGI, even a mixed and matched, for $460 or even $500, I'd try to snatch it up.

You could always try to find a 'correct' slide for it and such.

Yeah I found a correct slide for $75 but im trying to decide if I should do that and sell the Ithica slide it came with would this kill the value any? Also does it require a gunsmith to change out the barrels on these I would like to get a beat up barrel to shoot blanks for my reenactments........

Thanks

Were where they mismatched?

A lot of them were mismatched by armorers for various reasons, like frame to slide fit, or just in a rush to tear them down and get them back up and running.

Keep what you have and shoot it, if you REALLY must have the "correct" parts keep everything you have.
Never know when "something" might come along that needs what you have....

Now quickly, throw those damned rubber grips in the trash.    And consider me first in line to take that old inaccurate, unreliable rattletrap off your hands.   I'll be sure it wont bother anyone else.
