A guy I work with gave me a bunch of ammo cans he got from his neighbor. They have some rust on them. What is the best way to refurb. them?

I've seen one guy who stripped a can clean, powder-coated the can and chrome-plated the cover.  Then he lined the inside with cedar and shelf and made it into a cigar humidor.
