How are the HP's?

Can't go wrong with HP.   I have owned several, and been very pleased!

STay away from the deskjet 5740.  Can't get this damn thing to keep working.  The damn color cartridge dries up way too fast.  

A number of folks at the office bought themselves combo units from various manufacturers and all are now regretting it.  One part fails and you've got a hog of a unit that now only does one thing.

With that said, the Epsons have complained of loud operation, the HPs are good quality but with too much use they drool ink out the bottom.  Lexmark - avoid like the plague.  Those are the only ones I have experience with.

For my money my $99 on sale Brother HL-2040 laser kicks inkjet butt for performance (yes, only B&W but thats fine for me) and cost of operation.  Find a good deal on a scanner and as long as you have a built in modem you've got it all except for the sheet feed of the combo units for scanning in faxes.

The wireless HP All-in-one for about $400 down at office max.  

Actually the software is REALLY FAT, other than that, good printer.

I've been real happy with the Epson Stylus printers over the years.

I've got a Photo R300 now, and the thing even prints on printable CDs and DVDs.

The advantage of the Epsons over Lexmark and HP are that the ink cartridges are just that: ink cartridges. No print heads, no circuitry, just ink. That means it's even easier to buy cheap ink from third party mfrs, since each cartridge is much simpler.

When I was printer shopping a while ago the Canon i560 seemed to be a standout. $100 or less, seperate ink cartridges, above average print quality and other pluses according to the reviews. I have had it for a while and like it. HP Lasers are great for black and white. I have both and get the best of both worlds that way.

Let the re-fill/replacement cartridge prices be you guide! If you can even re-fill the cartridge. HP recently started putting little mylar bags in their ink jet cartridges so one cannot re-fill them.

It depends on what you want...laser, ink jet, color, B&W, or what.....just check out the per page print costs with an eye to what percentage of page coverage a particular company uses as a measurement, and you should be OK.

Look around for a good used commercial printer. Most of them are somewhat economical to replace the cartridges and there are a lot of good printers out there from bankruptcies ect.

Laser is the way to go if you can stand the outlay!

Incidently, Dell has a good combo unit out.

I'd wholeheartedly recommend the HP 7410.  After some cartridge issues with a 7310 and absolutely useless 'offshore quality specialists', HP replaced it witha 7410 (worth a $100 more) without a lot of talking on my part.  I had it the next day, too.  PM me if you need the gory details.

Ink is not cheap, but it works out ok for what I do...not a lot of printing, but I need it fast.
