Studfinders never work for me, they just beep incessantly when I pick them up.
Sorry. (I have a Ryobi that I bought at Home Depot, and I'm not happy with it. At least that might help narrow your choices.) |

I picked up one at radio Shack for $10, and it works fine. It's a bitch to use on textured ceilings, though.

Arent studs so many inches apart by code? All you have to do is to find the end stud and measure inward marking at that distance i would think.

The problem is that the pipes are secured to the studs and it would be an expensive "opps!" to miss the stud. |

I have the cheap Stanley from Home Depot. It sucks, but if you move it *really* slowly and pass over the same area 10 times you'll get an idea where the studs are located.
This is with standard drywall and 2x4. Do not trust the 16" on center or 18" on center. That looks nice on the architectural detail illustrations but guys will fudge a little during the build to make things work. |

I have the Stanley 77-260 IntelliLaser Pro Laser Line Level/Stud Finder, works well.
