Coyote brown finish
HK rear barrel sight
Optics accessory rail
Vortex flashhider
Clear magazine
Extended mag release

This is a prototype by Grenadier Precision, and their rep has already mentioned changing a few things.  Specifically, the optics rail is going to be reworked, and the actual weapon pictured is a 7.62x39.  The 5.56mm magazine is just for show.  Soon a 5.56mm version that accepts these mags will be available.

Sorry, I don't know price or when it will hit the market.  It's just awesome to look at.

Mods, I realize you may want to move this to the AK forum, but I like to interject a little gun talk into GD once in a while, in an effort to keep it real.

ETA: looks kinda like an AK's attempt to imitate a Sig 55x series. I like.

Even given that I really can't stand the official Third World Rabble issue rifle, that is one nice looking piece.  Makes me rethink the whole AK thing.  Might have to get one now.

FAL parts (on second glance it looks like a R4 folder...)

HK parts

AR parts...

I was goig to say that, I've owned really nice tight fitting aks, you can't get it that tight to put a sight there is stupid

The rail for mounting optics is not on the dust cover.  Only the open HK rear sight is on the dust cover, which is no big deal.

I like it.  Definitely an improvement over past variations I've seen.

does it finally have a bolt-hold open device for when the magazine gets empty?  If not, I'll pass.

The HK rear sight stinks compared to the AR sight. Putting it on the rear dustcover is silly anyway, as that part is loose on even the best AKs. That is why Kalashinkov put the sight up on the gas block.

Blasphamy!  Aks are SUPPOSED to be ugly!  I love my Romanian AK with wooden furniture!  I would never dress it up all pretty-like with plastic.

The sight base isn't mounted on the dust cover. It's mounted forward of the cover where the rear sight normally is located on a standard AK. Since this model uses an HK type rear sight, that freed up this area for the optics base. That area is much more sturdy and stable than the dust cover.

BTW, that's a really nice rifle. So long as it doesn't cost $1000 or $1200, I'd be greatly interested.

Polished turd.

I love my AKs, but I also see them for what they are. Cheaply made rifles, designed to be utterly reliable, while sacraficing accuracy, fit, and finish.

That one does look really cool, but I doubt it will ever match a decent, basic AR for accuracy, and considering that good maintenance will keep an AR running well, I doubt this is much more than a high priced toy for people who want something cool looking and different. Like me.

The optical base is mounted on the gas block.

The iron sight is mounted on the cover.

There is a reason that Kalashnikov didn't put the iron sights back there.

I disagree entirely.

I own a VEPR-II. It is made well, has good fit and finish, and is an extremely accurate rifle. And it cost a little more than half what my Bushmaster cost.

The AK is an excellent rifle when done properly. It is just not as ergonomic or versatile when it comes to mounting stuff on it as the AR platform.

Suddenly, I may be in the AK market. Where can I get one??

48thHighlander (the guy who made it) discussed this at Lightfighter...

Rear sight offers improved shooting over the standard due to the sight radius and sight picture and the top cover is rock solid. We were going to use a tensioning set screw like Krebs does, but there was no need. Most Euro top covers are solid as a rock. The Galil has no provision for this either and does fine.

The next one has an HK front end. This one was made from scraps lying around for CHEEP.

Yeah - I mean, we'd be much better off with the very first, original AR design than the one we have now.

Innovation - bad.

Never progressing - good.

It is kinda funny how these "20 Minute Purists" pick and choose at what point development/progression stops and anything they don't like or agree with is heresy.

Nobody here is looking at the feature on this rifle that, in my eyes, makes it totally bitchin'.

Observe:

Extended magazine release. Now you can release your AK mags without having to wrap your hand all the way around the front of the magazine! Hells yeah! Where can I obtain one of these rad little catches?

(I honestly can't seem to find an actual LINK to the Grenadier Precision page, just some lame little phoblog that poses as a product gallery)

Besides, I think that HK91 rear diopter is a great idea. I'd like to try one out on my 74.

I like it.  Something like that might interest me in getting an AK.  I wonder about making the gas block (?) with a short section of picatinny rail instead of the rear sight attachment... would make a nice mounting point for an aimpoint on a low ring.  Don't forget a galil-esque thumb safety

And how about a simple rear sight with a flip aperture like an A1 or FAL para rear sight?

ETA:  don't care for the trick mag release, seems counter-intuitive and easily snagged.

But I dont thing any of you have noticed that us common people will ever be able to get our hands on one...

Short barrel..... Check
Fun switch....   Check
Evil 3rd hole with pin.... Check

They could cost $49.99 and you still would not be able to get it (unless your a SOT dealer).
