Lowe's "Home Improvement Warehouse" Promoting Anti-gun Messages

from Melissa Seaman
Newslinks Director, KeepAndBearArms.com

Lowe’s Companies Inc., one of the nation’s largest retailers of home improvement products, appears to have expanded its enterprise to include promoting anti-gun propaganda on the Internet. The Lowe’s website, under the guise of its "Home Safety" message, tells gun owners to "[r]emove any guns from the house" because "homes with guns are much more likely to have a murder or suicide of a family member than in homes without guns." The website also claims "[h]omes without guns are safer for children." These anti-gun messages can be found under a section of the website called "Protect Your Child: Information from Lowe’s & Johns Hopkins."

While it may be surprising to see Lowe’s promoting these kinds of anti-gun messages, the fact that the "guide" was put together by the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy and the Consumer Federation of America (CFA) should explain a great deal. The Johns Hopkins Center has a long history of producing biased, anti-gun "research," and the CFA has promoted numerous attacks on our Right to Keep and Bear Arms. Most recently, CFA joined with the gun-ban extremists at the Violence Policy Center (VPC) in an attempt to further the lie that firearm manufacturers are not already subject to countless regulations.

Missing from the Lowe’s/Hopkins/CFA message was any mention of promoting educational programs for children, such as the award-winning Eddie Eagle GunSafe™ Program.  Also absent is any type of supportive communication about the many people who do use a gun in the home to successfully defend life, liberty and property.

Here it gets even worse.

Gun Safety
Homes without guns are safer for children.
If you must have a gun in the home, keep it unloaded in a locked box.
Store the bullets in another locked place.

www.Lowes.com/Lowes/howTo/howtoDocument.asp?ID=excuses

When You Hear: I need to keep my gun nearby, so if a robber comes into the house I
can protect my family.

The Facts Are: Homes with guns are much more likely to have a murder or suicide of a
family member than in homes without guns.

What You Can Do: Remove any guns from the house. If a gun must be kept, keep it in a
locked box and store bullets locked up somewhere else.

Firearm Injury Prevention
Guns are a leading cause of injury and death to children. In 1995, 170 children between the ages of 5 and 14 died from unintentional firearms injuries, principally during recreational activities or at home. (Source: National Safety Council).

THIS IS A LIE! The NSC does NOT list gun injuries as anywhere NEAR a 'leading cause of death' --obviously! 170 children??? Compare that to their stats on falls, drowning, auto accidents, poisonings and 'medical misadventures': www.NSC.org/lrs/statinfo/99toc.htm

Stay away from guns and bullets.
* If there is a gun in the home, keep it unloaded and locked away from children.
* Bullets should be locked away separately from guns.

Activities
Have your children think about a possible firearms hazard in your home or in the home of a friend or relative. Track the newspaper or local TV coverage of any incident in your community involving firearms injury or death. Discuss what happened with your children. How could it have been prevented?

This is for TEACHERS to TEACH CHILDREN! It is obvious propaganda to make children feel "unsafe" if their parents own firearms. What about tracking the many MORE times guns are used to SAVE LIVES?

Imb,

The largest HMO in California has brochures against guns in their literature racks. Main lobby and elsewhere, prepared by (?) the American Academy of Pediatricians or similar group. Will have to check...

Expect to see more brochures like these in the most unexpected places. Like your cup of noodles...

Now, now, Imbrog|io, you've done EXACTLY what they wanted you to - assumed that "170 accidental deaths" = "gun ACCIDENTS are a leading cause of death for children".

Now, according to the Centers for Disease Control for an ages 5-14 the "unintentional death by firearm" number was 169, so that agrees with the NSC data.  There were an additional 404 homicides in that age range, however, and 184 suicides.  Another 153 committed suicide by some other method.  Anyway, the total firearm involved death toll for 5-14 year-olds was reported as 782.

In comparison, there were 560 drownings, 71 poisonings, and 2254 motor vehicle involved deaths.  A total of 782 kids between 5 and 14 died as a result of gunshot in 1995, out of a total of 4985 deaths, or about 16% of the total.

Of course ACCIDENTAL deaths made up only 3.3% of the total.

It's all in how you word it, you know.  Propaganda requires careful wording.

BTW, for 1998 (latest data available) the number of accidental deaths for this age range was 103 - an improvement of 39% - without new gun-control laws, and WITH an increase of several million new guns in private hands.  Imagine that!

The CDC site is a really interesting place to spend some time http://webapp.cdc.gov/sasweb/ncipc/mortrate.html

Hey Imbroglio!
Try actually going to www.Lowes.com/Lowes/howTo/howtoDocument.asp?ID=excuses
and see what you get! We already beat them up about this two weeks ago, and they pulled the excuses thing off. They also said they were sorry and would check their sources a little better in the future. LETS KEEP WATCHING! I dont trust them either!

Well, for some of you folks that don't keep your American Rifleman(I keep mines for future reference) and throw them out, you may want to cut your address label out, and donate them to your local doctor/dentist office.  I know that some good people go through and remove these obnoxoius reading materials(I believe some do-gooders regard reading gun magazines as just one step above looking at porno mags).  I know that some of my American Rifleman magazines lasted only 24 hours.

As I stated on the other thread about Lowes where everyone got responses stating Lowes had no position on the issue of gun control.[-!-]Here's to you Lowes. I told you so!!

I posted this thing almost 2 weeks ago before Lowes came out with their weasel statement.

Those weren't my stats. It was from the article I reposted.

The point I was making was that their "Safety Council" is stacked with rabid anti-gunners and until those people are dumped there will always be an anti-gun agenda, even if it is covertly.
