It's pretty gunked-up inside and needs a pretty thorough cleaning. It looks like it still has WWII powder residue in it, along with a few dead German ghosts...

damn, that second pic was slow to reload!
very very nice condition, bet it didn't see much action in europe!  i'd say $600-700? i base that on the fact that i have a ww1 dated colt i got for $850. is that a replaced slide release? |

It was built between 1944-1945 according to the serial number.
1911-A1 with the proper style small parts (the slide stop does not appear correct. It looks like a blued slide stop instead of a grey parked) Has been hardened at the muzzle end, but not around the ejection port. Worth between $1300-$1500 in that condition, IF the barrel is the correct barrel, and has the correct magazine. |

SN's 1609529-1743846 indicate 1944 Colt manufacture. Looks like a proof mark is visible on the trigger guard as well. Nice pistol, I'd love to know it's history. ETA: many of the 1911a1's close to that # wound up with OSS. |

I think my Colt is the same exact gun as yours. I have a 1944 Colt 1911A1 (all correct) in about 97% condition. It's worth about $1800-$2000.
BTW, The barrel and magazine are supposed to be blued on those 1911A1 Colts and it should have a 1911 type early hammer. Here's mine

I would hang onto it if I were him. That's a good looking Colt 1911, and there's no telling how much history is attached to that peice. Tell him it's only worth $200-300 and do him a favor and take it off his hands.

The serial number indicates it was probably manufactured in 1944.
Here is my reference: 1911 reference. Since someone got there ahead of me already, I'll comment on the slide release. My 1944 Remington Rand also had an aftermarket slide release, so I purchased an original as a replacement (from Northridge, IIRC.) It cost me about $30, but came wrapped up in the original grease paper and string.

Frame dates to 1944
Inspection mark reads GHD: Guy H. Drewry Colt S/N 845,000 to 2,360,600 Looks all there to me but without taking a closer look, not way to be certain. Is there a proof mark on the top of the slide near the rear site? Regardless, good looking pistol and could be very collectible. IMHO, The finish does not appear to be original and the slide stop looks a bit off. A authentic 1911 of that year with original finish in good shape can likely fetch $2K+. A rework in good shape, $800-1250. These are of course just a guess based on what i have seen, dont take to to the bank. I am sure more will chime in that know better then I. Nice gun though! CH |

That is good. Have you looked behind the firing pin stop to see if there are numbes? (Hint there shouldnt be After a closer look at that slide stop I am pretty sure its not correct. SHould look like this one... ETA: Its not a bad thing, just an earlier version. Possible that it was assembed with this one in lue of the new version shown below as I am certain they had plenty of bits and peices laying around.  CH |

The slide stop definitely looks out of place... Everything else on the gun is parked, dirty and worn. It's so dirty, the slide won't close without a little push... I'm pretty sure the gun is otherwise genuine... I think I can buy it for $400 or $500.... At least those are some numbers my buddy mentioned when he left it with me... Just not sure if I'll be able to sleep at night if I buy it that cheap...

It looks like the barrel has been sanded (part you see at ejection port) ??? And there is a hole drilled in the side of the rear sight????

The barrel finish should be blued. From the picture it looks like the chamber/hood are bare steel. Also, someone has messed with the rear sight and put a dimple on the right side.
The correct slide stop, barrel and magazine (C-L, C-R or C-S) can be occasionally found on eBay. www.coolgunsite.com/pistols/1911infopage.htm BTW, those sold for $25 in 1962 through the NRA and CMP. |

Get pics of any markings on the lower barrel lugs.
That will give us a clue about the barrel, and wether or not it is the correct barrel for the gun. |

The barrel says "Colt 45 Auto Match"  The rifling looks terrible... I thought it was leaded real bad, but it won't scrape out at all. It looks like it was rusted and shot afterwards...  Looks like it will need a barrel and slide stop lever to be back to original... |

Well, With the barrel, it COULD be a military National Match barrel, but my Clawson's book doesn't cover NM guns.
I don't have my other 1911 refrence guide handy, but are there any marks on the lower lug itself, like a c in a cirlce or a p? With the barrel being shot, and the slide release being incorrect, I would offer about $800, because you have to spend a bit to get a correct barrel, if you want to make it 100% GI spec again. The finish looks original, and the darkening at the muzzle end is from the chemical reaction in the metal from the hardening process. The peening on the rear sight isn't really a detractor, because it could have been peened like that in an armory. After looking at the pics again, it also appears that the hammer is blued (appears darker in the pics).... |

I believe the mainspring housing is not correct either. It should be a checkered pattern on a correct Colt instead of vertical lines.

The peening on the rear sight is not correct by any means. Howver a blued hammer, barrel and magazine is correct on a Colt. |

Refinished. The color difference is exaggerated if its been redone, its noticable but not to that extent on a unrefinished one. The BBL should be blued but might be correct as the markings are correct [unless it's a colt commercial BBL], It's also probably pretty shot as 45 ammo was all corrosive in WW2. Small bits should be a different color, not the same as the frame and slide. See the X on the triggergard? Not from the factory. It could be arsenal refinished what are the other markings?
Also looking at the grip area, looks as if metal has been stripped from the sides as the edges are VERY soft looking. Should be a reasonably crisp dish and such, but this one is not. Looks as if GHD is soft also, I seriously think it's been redone. 6 to 7 TOPS. I've bought better for less, but they are getting harder to buy. If the BBL is shot the value is less but a little roughness, if the rifleing is OK will be OK. Forget about lead bullets tho,as it will lead like no tommorrow. Offer 500, it's a reasonably fair price to start at. Edit, BBL says match, NOT correct as made. Could have been used when rebuilt or just a old civi shot out BBL someone put in in the past. 500 is fair. NO true collectors value but still looked for by those who want a USGI put together. |
