I work with this guy....

He is an absolute moron, and even after a thourough training and 4 months of work, he still makes massive mistakes and is just generally a PIA.

BUT.....

The goober has a fiance, a foster child, etc.  despite this the boss had to disipline him for being in his account on adultfriendfinder.com on the company computer (he didn't erase the history, despite being an "IT" guy for a big company for years), and on top of that has been macking on EVERY female we work with, asking them out, etc, of course not telling them about his present situation.

ANYHOW...

This dork has pissed me off repeatedly by being a general moron, and me having to continually fix his mistakes, fubars, fuckups and so on.  He won't even pay attention when I try to show him how to fix his mistakes, and will take off early from work without clearing it etc.

So....

Not only is he a moron, but he is stupid enough to piss people off AFTER they have found out about his indescretions.

I know eventually he will string out enough rope to hang himself, but I am getting to the point where I kinda wanna kick the chair out from under him...

You don't fire people, they fire themselves by not doing their job.

I have had a few.  ANd I have had to let many people go in the past.

Since I hired these people and trained these people I always took it as a personal failing when I had to let them go.

Regardless of what some people think, the way someone behaves in their personal lives reflects heavily on their professional life.  If he is trying to screw around on his future wifeee, sooner or later he'll try to screw the co.  It's all about standards.  If it's your job to make these decisions, can his ass.  Sounds like you have already given him enough chances.

Just remember that as soon as we change from "each to what he earns" to "each to what he 'deserves'" the terrorists win; and we move one step closer to socialism.  Don't let him suck your company dry just because he can make a nice pity case for you.  If you keep him, might as well go out and hire all the out of work people who have lots of kids (and mistresses) to support.  Oh yea, don't forget to slash the top to his jeep

If you dont do it, it could possibly cost you your job. covering for him and letting management find out about it is bad in their eyes also. they will ask some shit like "why didnt you bring this to us earlier?" get what I mean?

I've been in this situation more than once.  The best thing you can do is stop helping him.  Just cut off all assistance and let him do his own work.  If he whines, just say "Sorry, man, but I'm busy with my own stuff."

By continually fixing his mistakes, you're actually making it easy for him to be a fuck up.  Instead, let him screw up every thing he touches and refuse to help until your supervisor asks you to.  Then, of course, fix that mistake and only that mistake, and wait for the next one.  What will happen is the boss will get so tired of having to come and ask you to sort things out that this guy will find himself out of a job really fast and you'll be the star employee of the department.

So basically, he's got more than enough rope to hang himself already.  Now you just have to stop giving him more slack.

He gave himself the rope and got on the chair all by himself, he is trying to kick it out but needs help. He sounds like a big time liability with no compulsion to reform. Fire him now or give him one more chanve and make it painfully clear that he is under teh gun and one slip up he is toast. Guage his performance to see how serious he is. He may make an honest mistake still but you will know his motivation.

Very true. I used to tell my employees that  I never have to fire anyone. I did occasionally have to come by and tell them that they quit and just didnt know it yet. they quit their job then they quit being productive. I was very kind and gave people probably too many chances, thats ok, because those I let go knew they deserved it and other employees saw them as wasteful dirtbags who passed up multipple opportunities to reform.

I just want to add one thing, since it sounds like he is going one way or the other.

DOCUMENT everything you can, including the fact that he was informed of the fuck-ups, and given the opportunity to correct his mistakes.  It is time to create a paper trail that leaves absolutely no room for mis-interpretation as to why he was let go.

CYA is the rule of the day.
