What's with turning socks inside out before washing?
This one has me stumped... |
Because the sock monster hates the way they feel, so he'll leave them in your dryer.
It's not a funny question, it is a serious scientific inquiry as to the why's wherefore's and whodathunkits behind the clothing industry (Smartwool© in this particular case) and why reading the label is fun-da-mental. I have all these damn socks and the label says "Turn em inside out" and by gum I wanna know why!!!
I've never heard of that my entire life. Why would you turn them inside out when it's the outside that gets dirty? |
I don't do it and my socks turn out fine. I think it has to do with how some people take off socks, ie pull them from the top and end up inside out, and that's how they get tossed into the hamper. Other than that, I have no idea.
well, they were "Irregulars"... maybe the washing instructions were printed wrong?
Yup. You can do the same thing with shirts. Stops the outsides of the clothing from rubbing against eachother and wearing out. |
Never thought about that. Much obliged. |
I think it has to do with picking up lint. Inside out means lint dots stay inside instead of pilling up on outside of sock.
i turn them inside out and i also pull the pants pockets out so that lint collects on the other side....
"REAL" men dont worry about it...throw everything in the washer......add detergent...................select longest regular cycle............throw all cloths in dryer for 1 hr....................be happy with your pink shirt and skivvies and STFU
That works too. |
yeah yeah, I tried that until my 2XL shirts shrank and wound up looking like something out of a Sg1tAr5 doll flick... then I am stuck with looking at belly button lint and guys named "Laiysle*" hitting on me... NO THANK YOU. *or however the hell you spell it. |
I just wear the same pair until they wear out anf throw them away, no washing
I think I just figured out why you're always saying that women don't like to be near you. |
+1 Purposely turn your socks & shirts inside out? Wouldn't they naturally end up that way when you remove them.... |
Yes. It is very important to keep white socks from fading. Of course, YMMV. |
I figured out its because I act like I feel |
the outside doesn't get dirty, the inside does. The outside just sits inside your shoe. The inside is up against your foot soaking up sweat all day. |
The inside gets dirty, yes, but the outside does as well. The insides of your shoes get dirty, too. |
Hey, I check my own fluids, dammit. |
I'm with SP1Grrl on this one. Socks belong right-side out when they go into the wash. Socks fading? Wtf?! |
No car. Got smashed. Where've you been?!?!? |
Mine are inside out because that's how they end up when I take them off. They get clean enough either way. |

I'm not touching that one. Back to socks! |

Colored socks for fade and lint.
White socks shouldn't matter, unless its for reasons with the elastic in the top part. |
Inside out? Do we have a consensus??? |
My smartwool socks (for hiking) say to do that, I think it has something to do with the loft. I got this brand of sock for hiking but now I will wear nothing else. I wear the thin ones in the summer, they are soft and my feet are never sweaty or clammy.
I don't worry about it if they are not all inside out. |
I know people who do that just they can distinguish the ones they've already worn.
+1 But I can do you one better MK, if you have a "long hair" inhabiting your cave and she's on your ass about never doing the laundry- Welll Roger that, "Do" the laundry and if she's one of those particulars folk, revert to your bachelor days and apply your method stated above-blatently #*$%ing it up so bad she'll never let you touch the laundry again- even if you offer. Problem solved |
You turn Smartwool and other various makers (I'm a big fan of bridgedale) of hiking socks inside out because these kinds of hiking socks are different than normal socks. There are multiple layers. The inside wicking layer pulls the water away from your skin (surface) and to the outer layer. The inside layer is the one that ends up with all the sweat on it, so you turn them inside out to wash the part most affected. |
Maybe you and I use socks differently, but it is the inside of my sock that gets sweaty and dirty. The outside usually only contacts the (relatively) clean inside of my shoe and my hardwood floors. |
