I think he's a bit optomistic on his timeline but pretty damn hard core for doing it.

I missed that before. That seems like a harsh reaction. I do wonder whether he'll be able to keep it off if he really loses all the weight on his trip. He could still be eating enough each day while walking that if he ate that amount at home he'd get fat again. Besides it's easier to eat right away from your daily situation, I think.
If he's got the time, money and it's not a big hassle for his family I don't see what the big deal is. Might be kind of fun, people travel the appalachian trail and I bet that takes longer than his route on good roads.
