What is the most "American" gun of all time?
When seen by someone anywhere in the world, evokes images of the United States? |
Well, when I was growing up, I wasn't exposed to those "evil" things called guns...so all I saw were BB guns and M16's (G.I. Joes + movies). So I would have to say Red Ryder BB gun or the M16A2.
JMHO |
But Garand was born up in "Eastern Russia"
(or as we like to call it in Wisconsin; "Canada") |
Suprised to see that noone has mentioned the Winchester 30-30 lever action yet.

You didn't ask which one I "love" the most.
The obvious answer is the Colt Single Action Army, the Peacemaker. Worn by true American "buckaroos". |
I disagree. The case is not so clear cut, what about the 1911, the M16, the Colt Peacemaker etc |
I would have to say the 1911. If you ask anyone who knows anything about guns they know the 1911.
SAA, the Peacemaker is by far the essential American gun.
Everyone should have one. I have the Cimarron replica in .45 LC among others. Love to shoot that thing. |
ummm look at my post above? |
It's all perspective, it can also depend on how old you are as well. For me it would be the Garand though. |

Winchester Model 94 .30-30
1911 .45 Colt SAA M-16 M-14 M1 Garand There's a whole bunch of Model 94's out there.... HH |
buckaroos???? Just how old are you? Sgat1r5 |
The Colt SAA, the Winchester lever action, the M1 Garand, the 1911 and the Thompson all define American and the course its taken.
The 1911 is the most copied and popular handgun in the world. We introduced it to the world by carrying it into battle.
Name one other gun that has that type of reputation. |
Dat's funny right dar I don't care who you are! Funny and true! BigDozer66 |
If it ain't a Colt it's just a copy! I am going to get me a Cimarron someday! BigDozer66 |

I'd have to go with the levergun. As far as I know there were revolvers, automatics and semi autos all over the world, but the Winchester was born in the USA. Other counties had prototypes of all other types of firearms except for the lever action rifle that I know of.
Honorable mention would be the Gatling Gun. |
man, that was a tough choice but in the end it came down to the colt saa. everyone has subguns, semiauto battle rifles and pistols, and select fire assault rifles. but who else had the sixgun? especially in the same period?
Lever actions are considered to be a "american" style gun by foreigners.
My vote would be the 1911. The Pennsylvania (kentucky) rifle is definitely in the running. |
I have no idea which one to vote for, but this is a cool idea for a thread.
colt saa. was just looking at a pic of teddy roosevelt carrying one when he went west. whats more american than that
i'm way to young to appreciate the western era (born in '84) but knowing what my dad watched when he was a kid, i'm surprised there arent more answers geared towards that.
Tommy Gun is the most "Chicagoan" gun of all time.
M16 does not identify America. M1 Garand is historically an amazing rifle, but has no American ID issues. Colt SAA is definitely my pick...there is no other country with a "Wild West" or cowboy image to it but the USA! M1911 is adored by us and my other American men, but show one to any "normal" person and they'd have no clue. Colt SAA has my pick for sure. |
Could some one post a pic of a Colt SAA. I want some one at my work to see it. Thanks
I found a pic of one to show them. |
buckaroos! yikes "I" am that old...30-30 & 1911 tie, maybe 30-30 not known outsid US (except s. america), so probably 1911...YEA!
Colt SAA. Thanks to all the Cowboy movies, it's the gun even a peasent in darkest Africa could ID.
I think he's got that right. |
Colt single action army. M16 s are used by alot of countries. Unless ya know your guns a Garand looks like every other wooden rifle out there. Thompson just says MOBSTER. Colt SAA screams old west and old west screams America to me. BTW I dont own any of the choices except the 1911 and the AR.
Tennesee Long Rifle or Lancaster Pennsylvania style Muzzleloder of Course.
+1 |
Another vote here for the Thompson. |
