I have only traveled to English speaking Canada once and serval US large cities so this opinions relflect that expierience.

I just got back from Montreal, billed as North America's most European city.    My wife and I had fun and you can tell you are not in the US.  It is quite different.  It is said it is a French speaking city and provience.  I fell this is a little misleading.  Most residents speak French however they also speak English, almost every one.  I only encounter one person that didn't speak any English, one person that didn't speak enough to get by and one person that I think just didn't want to talk to me.  I saw several times where two Montrealers were speaking in French but when they had something really important to say they changed to English.  They are really serious about keeping the French however.  They really go out of there way to speak it to their children and teach it in schools.  The law requiring French above English on signs and spoken in business and .gov is popular and wanted.  However I think if the law was repealed English would end up dominating French in just a few years out of conveinence.  Many times I felt like the speaking of French was just an empty facade.  It was cool hearing people carry on their daily lives in another language.  (Other than Spanish )

Montreal is probably the most english speaking city in Quebec. Try Quebec city the next time you visit.. You will notice a considerable difference.
A lot of english speaking people live in Montreal but work in Ottawa and surrounding areas.
New Brunswick is the only offically bilingual province in Canada.

We were thinking about Quebec City in the future.  And I figured it would be different (language wise) outside the city.  However Montreal is my only reference point.  The "francaicse seulment" did feel a little forced however.
