The American Civil Liberties Union will train volunteers to monitor the Minuteman project along the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas and New Mexico, and document any abuses of human rights or violence, said Claudia Guevara, a coordinator for the ACLU's Legal Observers program in El Paso.

The Minuteman Civil Defense Corps volunteers, and other groups like it, patrol the border to report immigrants who appear to have entered the country illegally. Critics have called them vigilantes.

Guevara said the program is designed to prevent violence and abuses against migrants and shed light on border conditions that lead to migrant deaths. "We won't be there to engage in dialogue or confront the Minuteman groups. We are a nonviolent group," she said.

El Paso County Sheriff Leo Samaniego and other sheriff's officials met Friday with Minuteman organizers who requested the meeting, said Rick Glancey, spokesman for the Sheriff's Office.

"Sheriff Samaniego characterized the meeting as positive," Glancey said. He added that organizers were advised in writing of Texas laws they must observe, and were told to call 911 if they encounter situations that require law enforcement.

"The message they conveyed is that they believe the Border Patrol is doing a great job, but they don't have the resources they need to do what is required to secure the border," said Glancey, who did not know which Minuteman organization met with Samaniego.

Minuteman leaders in Arizona could not be reached for comment. Their patrols will begin in New Mexico and Texas in October.

Clifford Alford, an organizer for Border Watch in Las Cruces, formerly called New Mexico Minutemen, said he welcomed the ACLU. "It's going to make it look like we have more people out there," he said, adding that in one month, his group prevented 280 people from crossing the border just by their presence. They also reported more than 100 suspected undocumented immigrants to authorities. "We are for changing the immigration laws, and we use a humanitarian approach," he said.

Ramiro Cordero, a senior patrol agent for U.S. Customs and Border Protection-Border Patrol, said "We are not going to make any comments on the ACLU's issues or views." Previously, officials of the federal border security agency said only that they would monitor the Minutemen's activities.

Beginning in October, ACLU Legal Observers volunteers will go out to the desert in groups with two-way radios, cell phones and a video camera.

"Legal observers will position themselves alongside Minuteman volunteers, but will remain separate from them ... (and) at all times remain nonviolent and nonconfrontational with both Minutemen and law enforcement," according to a program flier.

which is it? they don't have the resources to secure the border? or, they are doing a great job?

I guess, to them, NOT securing the border IS considered to be doing a "great" job.............

I guess, to them, NOT securing the border IS considered to be doing a "great" job.............

Just because you don't have the funding/resources that you deserve doesn't mean you're not doing a good job. Do you also consider our soldiers in Iraq to be doing a bad job whenever they run out of supplies/make do with what they've got?

Anyhow... isn't most of the land the MM will be patroling private property?

All the ranchers have to do is give permission for the MM to be on thier land but not the ACLU.

There was a big rally here last night with the founder of the Minutemen and congressmen from California and even Colorado. Hundreds attended the rally as did about 300 protestors. The event was shut down for fear of what the protestors would do ... until that nasty Constitution got in their way and a law suit was threatened ... and the event was back on.

and they release them INSIDE the US, doesn't sound like a good job to me............

CARLSBAD ---- Thursday night's town-hall meeting on illegal immigration at Carlsbad High School was a decidedly lopsided affair.

Those who showed up after about 4 p.m. for the 7 p.m. meeting didn't get one of the coveted tickets to attend the forum, titled "The Illegal Immigration Crisis."

One anti-illegal immigration advocate inside the school's 400-seat capacity Community Cultural Arts Center said he believed the reason that so few immigration-rights advocates made it inside was because radio talk-show host Roger Hedgecock, who emceed the meeting, gave his listeners a heads-up on his Wednesday radio show.

"Roger told his listeners that we should arrive early, so we could fill up the auditorium," said Orange County resident Shain Sternod, 43. "There was no opposition, and he did not take any questions; so, it turned out not to be a town-hall meeting, just a series of speeches."

When the event's sponsor, state Sen. Bill Morrow, R-Oceanside, asked who among the audience believed the country is in "an immigration crisis" to raise their hands, virtually everyone did so. When he asked for those who didn't believe there is a crisis, only four or five people timidly raised their hands.

The general theme of Thursday night's speakers was that the government and citizens must do something to stop the flow of illegal immigrants into the country.

The more strident of the half-dozen or so speakers was author Madeleine Cosman, who rattled off a litany of problems she said are caused by illegal immigrants, including everything from a spike in the number of sexual predators in California and an increased homicide rate to an increase in the spread of infectious diseases.

The night's featured speaker was U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colorado, who, like Minuteman Project founder Jim Gilchrist, received a standing ovation. Both have achieved nationwide conspicuousness in their push for immigration reform.

The controversial Minuteman Project fielded several hundred volunteers in April along the U.S.-Mexican border in Arizona to observe illegal immigrants and report them to the U.S. Border Patrol. The operation drew worldwide media attention. Many of the volunteers were armed, and over the 30 days of the vigil, they succeeded in reporting 300 illegal immigrants who were then apprehended by Border Patrol agents.

Tancredo has become one of the leading figures in the fight for stronger enforcement of U.S. immigration laws and protecting the nation's borders.

In his speech, Tancredo charmed the like-minded audience with his sense of humor. Talking about a piece of immigration legislation now working its way through Congress, and sponsored by Sens. Ted Kennedy, D-Massachusetts, and John McCain, R-Arizona, Tancredo said: "I call it the McKennedy bill. I don't have to say anything else, but that it is sponsored by Kennedy and McCain."

SO the AMERICAN civil liberties union is going to watch the AMERICANS who are going down to watch the AMERICAN border and try to stem the flow of foreign nationals illeagally entering the US. and make sure that the AMERICANS rights arent violated by LEO's and the felons trying to circumvent our immigration procedures. right?.

illegals that are crossing are able to recognize them by their shirts
their government does everything it can to help the illegals cross

I agree with the principle of the Minuteman project, and they should welcome this oversight from Steve "yer gettin' a Dell" dude. No such thing as bad press, and embarrasing a pro-illegal immigration Federal government has its merits.

The American Civil Liberties Union on Saturday began training observers in El Paso to watch Minutemen as they patrol for undocumented immigrants trying to sneak into the country.

The ACLU will deploy volunteers in clearly marked shirts to ensure that civil and human rights are not violated. Organizers for Minutemen in Texas and New Mexico have said they will begin patrols in October.

"When you go and you actually talk to them, you'll see that the underlying reason they're here is not because of immigration or drugs, but because this country is changing," said Claudia Guevara, a coordinator from Los Angeles for ACLU's Legal Observer program.

Officials of border watch operations disagree and say Minutemen are making a political statement without breaking laws.

"The government has continued to fail to enforce U.S. immigration laws for four decades now, and it's time for the U.S. people to present their case under the First Amendment, and that's how we're doing it," said Jim Gilchrist, a founder of the Minuteman Project.

Some of the training session attendees opposed the Minutemen operations.

"There has to be a peaceful response to this Minutemen situation, and it's not going to be through protest, of course," said Paul Barraza, 37, a real estate broker from El Paso.

Couldn't the MMP vols just wear same/similar shirts? Not all of them, of course, but enough to make the wearing of the shirts ineffective.

I'd check to make sure that the "Legal Observers" shirts aren't copyrighted first, of course (and/or that the term isn't trademarked).
