Didn't some scientists kill themselves by strapping rockets to a car and flying into the side of a cliff?

You made a car fly with model rocket engines?

IIRC, he was a Darwin Award Winner

One question though, who paid for those mini coopers?

Nope, didn't happen. Lots of cool stories about it on the internet though.

I read on The Straight Dope that it did happen, because the guy who did it wrote in to tell the story.
Apparently, the rocket was a discarded JATO (booster rocket for assisting heavily laden planes like B-52s and C-130's get in the air).  It was a long story, I can't remember where I read it but google cecil Adams/The Straight dope/rocket car.

It's about problem solving and engineering.

They were given a project "Strap rocket engines to a mini-cooper and make it fly". They then have to sit down and figure out how to make it work. That show so the biggest reason that as an animal man has been successful, and why western civilization has been the most successful.

So basically, while Wilbur and Orville Wright were out trying to make it possible for man to fly, you two would have been sitting around saying "Why would anybody do that? That's a waste of time"

Yes, it was on last Friday's master blasters.  The rocket engines they used are the ones that act as boosters to the cruise missiles -- how were they able to obtain those rockets?  Each has 2500lbs of thrust, and they put two on each car.

I have the DVR set to record every new episode of Master Blasters. I can't wait to see the rocket lawn dart competition! If we have to explain why it's interesting, you wouldn't understand.
